who else wants a 181000 cell?

Who would like a new size battery made?

I love runtime. Really long runtime. I also like 18mm cells.

I have several nice drop-in's that have a voltage range from 3.6-6V and I want more runtime than 1 18650 or 2 primary cells can offer without switching out cells on the go. I have been thinking about finding someone to make cells that are the same width as the 18650 but longer.
What do you think about 1 li-ion cell with the length of 2 18500's and/or 2 18650's? Low voltage, high capacity, and will fit in our 18mm tubes.
Is the market there or am I alone?

I am sure they can be made but if nobody else wants them my cost would be, well, stupidly high I'm sure.

Re: Who would like a new size battery made?

I would be interested in an ~18999 to run a single cell in a bored C3, for example - I am happily running an M60 on a 6P/18650 (2600 mAh) and it almost feels a step down to run the M60 in my C3/2x17500 (total of 2200 mAh, 15% less total capacity) for a considerably longer light. If I could get 1.5 x 2600 = 3900 mAh for a single cell in my then-bored C3, I would jump on that in a heartbeat! Especially since the larger cell would exhibit even less voltage drop.
(You might want to ask a mod to move your thread into the batteries subforum tho.)

Edit: yes I know that mAh isn't additive, but the total contained energy in each cell is. Just an oversimplification on my part.

I think two 18650's is a little long, at least for me but something in between and a little thicker maybe? I can go thicker but i don't like flashlights.

Glad you are interested too! Maybe something can happen here.

You think if it got moved I would get as many posts from interested parties?

Thicker cells means buying more $$$ tubes and a lot longer wait time to get tubes and cells made. And I'm sure that's a typo because if you don't like flashlights you're in the wrong place LOL!

I'm thinking the same thing. That is one reason that I went with the Fivemega 1x26500 body to fit C-heads. You get a little more capacity.

But I think something with the length of 10cm is not going to be practical. I'm not a fan of lights that are that long, but it might be just me. Charging would be a pain, but doable.

Damn, I screwed that one up didn't I :)

I meant I don't like LONG flashlights, hehehe

The chemistry could pose a size limitation... maybe? Like the length can only be so many times the diameter.

More options certainly cant hurt;)

Re: Who would like a new size battery made?

- Its far too long to used in any practical number of applications
- the big aspect ratio will make it more fragile / difficult to handle
- As a log number product, it will likely have much less capacity than just 2 18650 in row/series behind each other (just like 18650 compared to 2 RCR123

-> Product idea failure

I wouldn't mind some longer 18mm cells to run in my 9P and my Raider. (3xCR123A)

I don't know what cells you're using, but an 18650 usually has much more capacity than a pair of RCR123 cells. :poke:

Re: Who would like a new size battery made?

I think it would be cheaper to buy a larger diameter tube. If you go with a 2x26500 tube from Fivemega you could run 1 26650 like this http://www.batteryspace.com/limnnirechargeable26650cell37v4000mah10arated148wh.aspx
and have 4000mah or run 2 26500 and have 8.4v and whatever capacity you can find. I would think that it would require a minimum order to get custom batteries therefore making them cost prohibitive.

I believe that is close to Sunlite batteries, but they probably connects two batteries inside the battery.

Re: Who would like a new size battery made?

It'll be nice and I certainly would like to try one out if they do make them.

However, you also have to consider the charger as well. We don't have charger that long, and even if we rig our current chargers, it will take forever to charge these cells with them. We may need to get hobby chargers just for these cells.

Wider would be better for me. I don't like long and thin. How about a double length c-size?

Plenty of us already have tubes that long.
You are incorrect. Battery sticks longer than this have been aroung a long time and they are not fragile.
You are incorrect again. I don't even see how you could think the capacity would be less.

Thanks for stopping by the thread.

Re: Who would like a new size battery made?

I'd just as likely just get a maglite and put a li-ion D-cell and a Cree led and have insane runtimes but find the 5 hour runtime on my P60 led based lights plenty long enough, If I need more than that I just carry spare cells and swap.

Re: Who would like a new size battery made?

I would be in for a nice 18990.

:twothumbs

Direct driving is a nice option for some of the latest high output configs.

It sucks wasting 10%-20% with a driver when all you want is nuclear mode.

So thats why I've never heard of all these batteries everyone is using.....They're custom made?

And what is direct drive?

Re: Who would like a new size battery made?

Yeah, I'd rather go wider than longer. I have several lights with extension tubes to run 2X18650 and I never use them because it's too long and the flashlight is unbalanced. Instead, I am using the 2X18500 extension because it's the absolute longest I am willing to go for EDC and that's even longer than I want. I would prefer 2X C sized or thereabouts.
