Has anyone here tried CCRadio-SWPocket yet? I'd love to hear the firsthand dirt from someone here. StarHalo? Anybody?

Those in the know aren't impressed by it; it's one of the rebranded CC models and not one of their originals, and the build quality is proportionately sub-par. Unremarkable reception performance, chintzy volume knob, susceptibility to RF noise and heterodynes/squeals, etc.

If you don't need the SW band, the Sangean DT-400W (http://universal-radio.com/catalog/spcialty/4400.html) is still my recommendation for the ~$60 class. If you must have SW (bearing in mind that it's just for hobby, it's of no use in an emergency and can be very tricky to work with), for this price class I'd go with the Kaito 1103 (http://universal-radio.com/catalog/portable/0028.html)

No use in an emergency??? I know absolutely nothing about all this, but thought SW was somehow quite beneficial in an emergency. What have I missed? (Really regret now the fact that I have passed over this thread for so long.)

All you're going to hear that's of substance news-wise on SW is from other countries - if there's a tornado heading for your town, or one just went through it, you won't find much help from Philippines radio..

If something like a nuclear attack happens, it will most likely be discussed a great deal, but only as a news item; there wouldn't be any emergency contact info, evacuation/meeting locations, etc. (The exception might be Armed Forces Radio, but you'd need a set with sideband reception to find it, and it's not a strong signal so you'd need a good outdoor antenna [intact] as well.)

The AM band is where the emergency info is/will be. Even if some massive event wipes out all the transmitters in your state, you'll still be able to easily receive stations from other states, no special radio knowledge or equipment required. (One of the presets I sometimes listen to in my car is a station in Denver, Colorado, 800 miles away and comes in just fine nightly.)

I posted about the yellow Sony way back on page 2 or 3 of this thread:

Even though it's been a couple of years since its release, this model would still be my first choice for an emergency radio.

I guess look into purchasing one when I get my next paycheck:broke:).

I have the pocket radio that's being sold at countycomm (the GP4-L if IIRC) but the reception is horrible in my area. Has anyone here have better luck with these models?

CountyComm carries a lot of quality stuff, but unfortunately not the radios..

If you're just wanting a pocket radio with good reception and not necessarily an emergency-only radio, I still recommend the aforementioned Sangean DT-400, which has reception on par with many car stereos.

Forgot to mention; Amazon has the DT-400 for $55 and a free shipping option, $20+ cheaper than the place I originally linked.

See it here: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0012YHQVE/?tag=cpf0b6-20

Thanks :)

hope to receive it the next couple of days. StarHalo u stated the radio up above was one of the best emergency lights to own. My question is whether hand cranks can last/durable? Just curious, I was thinking of purchasing one for emergencies in the future.

The crank is always the questionable part of a crank radio, since it's of plastic construction; but the way I view it is, if I'm in an emergency situation and I'm completely out of batteries, I'd rather have a crank with a 99% chance that it will work than no crank at all.

Aside from that, a 4-pack of batteries will power the Sony for about a month of nonstop operation. Plus there's a DC jack for creative power source connecting, such as a battery pack, car battery, etc..

I am looking for a radio that i had about 18 years ago, it was an am/fm and vhf, ran on a 9 volt and was a small portable. the case was black and had a aluminum face like some realistic radios, though i dont think it was realistic. i kind of remember an airplane on the front of the unit, i recently saw an ad for it somewhere. kind of a brief description, i hope it helps

I seem to recall a radio like this in the old Radio Shack catalog. Never had one. I suppose it was a Realistic.

It sounds vaguely familiar, but if you think there are a lot of old flashlights out there, wait until you see the number of old radios.. Fortunately there's a modest community of people who are radio collectors, so if you don't get a response here, search around one of their forums (eham.net is a notable one, they also have a large archive of older radio reviews that might help you)

Grundig has introduced a new 350 - it's so new that it's a 450; the S450DLX. Analog tuner with digital counter just like the 350s, uses 6 D cells, the backlight now lights both the display and buttons, and there are 50 memory slots (I have no idea how memories with an analog tuner would work, but that's what they're advertising..) Despite appearances, it's about 2" taller and wider than the 350. Available September 30th.

Edit: They've edited the description by removing the mention of an analog tuner with a digital counter; this would indicate that the 450 is all-digital.

I was just reading that this (S450DLX) is basically a re-badged Redsun RP-2100, which is supposed to be a decent radio.
