Nine years later and still, quite possibly, the only AA capable headlamp out there with red (or green) color function. I have two of the Aviator model.
I really hate AAA option, and not just that but triple AAA batteries required!
necropost:
I was curious what the net might say about the L1P these days.
I still have mine. I'm looking at it right now. Works great.
Even after letting a regular alkaline leak inside of it and it having sat that way for who knows how many years lol.
Inside it now is an Energizer lithium...
2020 would like to point out :D that, yes, the double tap will make it flash. But then you hold the power button briefly and that puts it into true strobe mode.
Received today.
Momentary on; 15 lumens. Further press will lock on. 45hr runtime.
Double press; 320 lumens. Further press will click on. 2hr runtime.

I really like the Energizer 3-LED headlamp.
Lightweight
swivel head
excellent white runtime and excellent red light runtime.
But it's a bit fragile. Looking for something more durable and also water resistant that is otherwise just like the E-3-LED.
Recommendations?
The SF is nice but it costs .............. well, you know.
Given the goals for this request, the ones in the running so far are the Mammut S-Lite and the PT Scout and the Petzl e+lite, despite those two being button cell lights.
Well it seems one person was intent on raising the dead.
Now that thread may follow the typical pattern of reading just the first few responses and readers shaking their heads in confusion as a result; "that ain't even close to small, WTH?"
single AAA power supply preferred but the Petzl E+Lite could also be an option.
Actual requirements:
- LO mode allowing for light in the 20-30s of hours
- At least IPX4 water resistance rating
- uber packable. Like if it were to take the form factor of a midsize swiss army knife that would...
they had these at the entrance to Home Depot and I couldn't resist when I saw the power ratings: 100/15hr, 18/35hr and on AA batteries to boot!
Pretty smooth light. About 15% larger than a Maglight 2AA then with the rubber overmolds it becomes about 25% larger overall in volume.
