Use of 4x AA and resistor or circuit

120 Ohms should give you about 20 mA with a typical while 5mm part. 12 Ohms would give about 200 mA with a LS (which is a lot of current from AA cells....). Doug Owen

Need some help with a LOW battery indicator

I'd suggest LM358. It's got two amps (you only need one), but it's half the size of the 339 (which has four). I agree that you'd be better served with a 2.5 or even 1.25 Volt reference IC (looks like a small transistor, 3 leads) like LM385 or LM336. And plan on driving a red LED (low Vf)...

Best rechargeable option for 9v Safe-Light?

I bought two of these rascals. So far the first has done two cycles on my Maha 777+ without incident. Charge seems normal, and terminates properly. The charger is set to Li of course. Doug Owen

To solder, or not to solder, batteries

I'm no doubt pressing my luck by trying to respond to this, in fact it's how I found out about the mistake I made WRT 2% Silver alloy above, but low melting point solders typically are based on other elements, usually Bismuth, Cadmium, or Indium. If you Google 'solder melting temperatures' or...

To solder, or not to solder, batteries

Almost an hour ago I found out that what I said above is wrong for two percent Silver alloy. Five attempts to correct this have failed...doesn't look like my day. And a computer restart. And I still can't edit it without locking the program up..... This is clearly not my day. I'll try correcting...

To solder, or not to solder, batteries

True enough, sorta. Such solder *begins* to melt at 185C or so, but is not fully molten until over 240C. Between these two temperatures, it's 'pasty'. These are the 'dangerous temperatures' WRT cold solder joints, where movement is fatal to the joint. The 'ideal lead solder', Eutectic...

clipping light to a book / specialized booklights?

I saw one a while back that plugs into a USB port. This not only provides a mount but power as well. Kinda clever..... Doug Owen

Why don't they offer clickie switch options when we order lights ?

Re: Optional clickie switches should be offered when ordering lights ! I agree with many here abouts, we live in a non standard world. You can go broke betting on what we want, these guys need to worry about tens of thousands and more units. I suggest that the vast majority of people...

Check out this light/circuit, I think its a lemon

    accumanager 20 uses vanson pcb`s

While I can't see the quality of the soldering (of course), I suspect it doesn't effect performance. Generally, opens would show as no charging or other overt problems. For sure, with modern fluxes, cleaning fulx and other residue from boards is only a cosmetic concern. Since the maker has...

Check out this light/circuit, I think its a lemon

Looks to me like he might have been intending to put some SMT parts in there at one point.......wonder if things didn't work out as planned? For sure that's a lot of trouble to go through to mount a switch and attach two leads. Doug Owen

To solder, or not to solder, batteries

Jim, Yes, I noted Bill's (and now your) *opinion* that this will cause the safety vent put in by the maker to 'fail to safe'. I don't think he does. All he says is 'don't do it'. And he backs that up with action, he (and every other reputable maker) uses welded on lugs. They have a reason for...

    zener slapdown for AAAs?

Not a good way to go. It's gonna waste the energy totally and probably toast the Zener unless it's a monster. You could be running many Amps, meaning even more Watts. A better idea would be a series diode (one Amp 'power supply' type) or two, or maybe a low value resistor, that you later...
