Defective LED chips?

In the past year, I have bought three LED zoomable tactical flashlights on Amazon, for less than $20 each. The first worked OK, with right size & features, and the zoom was prefect for my needs. But then the light output faded to almost nothing. I tried various batteries & chargers, but...
