"Wright Brothers" moment in nuclear fusion

They don't waste their time. I am sure they all receive excellent paychecks. It's just a giant scam like the "Human Brain Project". We all know politicians are generally scientific illiterates, but also like to cover this fact up by having group photos taken with actual scientists and have their...

Master thread for disasters and generators.

Maybe you want to apply fogging oil after each test run if it's going to sit for months after that. To make it more convenient, I installed a tiny hose nozzle between the air filter and the carburettor to which I can directly connect the spray can. Also, after shutting it off, pull the starter...

URLs gone wild, or, what are all those extraneous characters added on?

Ebay does that too. Usually the first question mark and the gibberish following it can be left away. Also when you want to link PDFs you found on Google this is helpful: https://urlclean.com/

Hamburgers & Hot Dogs: Best Places To Go / How Do You Make Them At Home?

I recently grilled my first hamburgers. To do that, I first had to build an appropriate Fire-Ring style grill. This process is described here: https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=de&tl=en&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fingers-welt.de%2FphpBB%2Fviewtopic.php%3Ff%3D14%26t%3D15864 The result...

Can you recommend a good headlamp.

I can recommend the Boruit D10. It's really a budget lamp, but it works just fine out of the box if you are ok with cool white tints. It works with 18650, and has a nice USB charge port. If you are a tint snob, you can swap the LED like I did...

    LEDs wearing out?

Another data point: In 2010, I bought some of the cheapest LED strips I could find on ebay. I put some short segments on a 12V wall wart in my workshop and never switched them off again. They are now at ~88,000h. Compared to the control samples, they have not become dimmer.

Does the feeling of hot on flashlight mean it has a good heat dissipation?

I do not agree with this statement. Generally, the LED will produce the same amount of thermal power over a wide temperature range. So, it does not make a difference if it is cooled well or it heats up so that it is barely destroyed, the amount of thermal power produced at a specific drive...

Need a flashlight for my parents

Question: What do most people need flashlights for? Answer: To store dead batteries. Pun aside, this is the truth very often sadly. And to make matters worse, alkaline cells tend to leak. So you must either store your batteries outside the flashlight, and find them and insert them in the dark...

Moved to the forest, need recommendation for a rechargable light

I like the Convoy S9, especially the warmer 4200K tint option. It makes a warmer, more natural light that brings out the colors better. You'll love the difference that it makes especially in a forest...

10W LED chip on 7W LED driver?

This is what will happen. Since chinese high-power LEDs are quite cheap, I only run them at half the rated power. In my desklamp, I run the 50W chips at 20W. http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?357036-SIS-desk-lamp-modding-with-2x-50W-Epistar-LEDs This way, they run more...

Things I've learned the hard way . . .(Part 2)

This usually only happens when they were tightened in an unprofessional way with an impact wrench, or when they are severely corroded. I always use a torque wrench to tighten them, and for some time I used a bit of grease to prevent corrosion. There are people who advise against grease, and...

    NE blizzard 1/4/18

Well, it does not usually get that cold in central Germany, but I still installed a heating system in my car, mostly to keep cold start wear down. I installed a heating pump in the primary (small) coolant circuit, and a silicon heating mat at the oil pan. I also have an electric heater in the...
