Anybody playing with these yet? Cheap LED fun!

Maybe they would last longer if mounted inside an aluminum c-channel that's mounted to the wall, with light bouncing off the ceiling. That's assuming that keeping them cool would extend life.

    Finding true cyan LEDs

Funny! I noticed the same thing, and a lot of "yellow" LED's are in fact amber. Mixing amber and green in the right amount does make a nice lemon yellow, better than a red-green combo.

LED Strips Without Diffusion: Safe Distance?

Thanks, SemiMan. Is this what you were referring to? http://www.elcfed.org/documents/CELMA_ELC_LED_WG%28SM%29011_ELC_CELMA_position_paper_optical_safety_LED_lighting_Final_1st_Edition_July2011.pdf Page 15: "Blue light, small source" 1 W/m^2: low risk, 400 W/m^2: moderate risk If the link...

Building an off grid solar lighting system?

I would skip the inverter and run everything DC. Motion-activated and short "on" times would really reduce costs of batteries and solar cells. Just one deep cycle marine battery and a basic 20-Watt solar charger with regulation might be enough. If each bulb is 30 watts, and the bulbs are...

Easy Homemade 3-Battery Charger? (AA/AAA NiMH)

Thanks March. I did a search, and the independent bay chargers are more affordable than I thought they would be. CZ, you got me thinking about that circuit more. It sounds like strict voltage regulation might be too inflexible to account for the nature of different NiMh batteries. If I'm...

Easy Homemade 3-Battery Charger? (AA/AAA NiMH)

Here's a ghetto charger that's even easier and cheaper to build: I think if the resistors and diodes are chosen carefully, and voltage measurements are done everywhere with sets of dead and fully-charged batteries + an open circuit voltage test, it could be safe and reliable. I'm not sure...

Easy Homemade 3-Battery Charger? (AA/AAA NiMH)

A friend of mine was complaining about his headlamp using 3 batteries even though batteries come in packs of 4, and I've been wondering how to charge sets of 3 batteries for my headlamp. It looks like there's a lot of interest in this subject on the whole Internet because flashlights and...

Diffusion or optics for LED strip lights?

Wouldn't the frosted tubes provide diffusion? I like to use frosted plastic dividers from office supply stores. There are some diffuser products meant for LED strips.

LED Strips Without Diffusion: Safe Distance?

Thanks for the replies. Decided to sometimes use frosted diffusers, sometimes take them off depending on the situation. I did some calculations, and based on FDA laser classifications, the wide-angle low-power LED's are very safe at normal distances, just irritating to look at. The FDA...

LED Strips Without Diffusion: Safe Distance?

I agree that diffusion looks much better when looking directly at the LED's. The glowing orbs behind a frosted diffuser are really nice, but it spreads the beam and makes it difficult to illuminate anything or anyone. It would be nice to light up a band playing at a bar when the LED's have...

LED Strips Without Diffusion: Safe Distance?

It seems like a lot of light is absorbed by common diffusers, and they add time and money to a project. I know many experimenters do testing without diffusion when they are using low-power LED's. Anybody know what distance is definitely safe and what distance is definitely not safe? I would...
