    Small Portable Radio's?

It's got a Karaoke function, so I'd guess the cassette is for all those Karaoke tapes without lyrics. I like radios with cassette players in them for recording DX station IDs. Also, I'm over 40, so I still have music on cassette. No 8 tracks though - I'm not that old.

Anybody notice the east coast quake?

I thought of that about an hour later. I didn't even turn on my 2 meter to hear what others in my area thought about it!

Anybody notice the east coast quake?

Woke me up (I work 3rd shift) and freaked me out a little. It felt like someone was shaking my bed to wake me up, but I live alone. As I was headed outside in my boxers and t-shirt with my house gun, it stopped shaking. I grew up near a quarry and I'm kind of used to a short shake here and...

    CB's anyone?

It's interesting how certain chassis are more popular in various areas of the world. Here in the US the Cobra 148/Uniden Grant XL is still the most popular even though the Grant XL hasn't been made in years, and the current 148 is made in China and isn't as good as the Philippines made model. In...

    Small Portable Radio's?

I tell people about this on a regular basis and they don't believe me!

    CB's anyone?

CB use in the USA has always been licensed, but about the time of the expansion from 23 to 40 channels the need to have an FCC issued call sign was waived. It is now a useage license in that if you want to use the service you are expected to obey the rules. People can, and have been banned from...

    CB's anyone?

Not exactly. We have GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) which is a narrow band FM service on 462/467 MHz. It requires a license which until recently didn't allow communication between licensees. It was intended as a service for family use, and only communication between family members was...

Man builds Solar Powered Cabin, under $2000 cash.

It's a little too small for me, but I like the idea. I've investigated building a dome home from a kit or an "earth ship" with the intent of getting off the grid. I read an article in Home Power magazine years ago where a guy bought a beat up single wide trailer and converted it to passive...

Spare Batteries for Handheld Amateur Radios

Rather than purchasing additional batteries, why not think about your radio as a cellular telephone and investigate how to charge it remotely? The wall wart charger (NC-72) probably isn't smart although it probably is a regulated supply. Investigate it's properties and find a portable and cheap...

    CB's anyone?

Give it a couple of years, and you'll be using FRS a lot more yourself as the sunspot cycle reaches it's peak and local comminications with AM CB becomes nearly impossible during daytime. Having a radio with an RF Gain control will help a little, but not much. SSB will again rule - especially...

    CB's anyone?

How true! Before the expansion to 40 channels, clarifiers tracked both transmit and receive on SSB. The amount varied from radio to radio, but was usually 1.5 kHz or less - plenty to allow several operators to chat without having to constantly adjust the clarifier. Strangely enough, most SSB...

Need an AM radio with excellent reception

Agreed! A 390A should fill the bill! I still don't understand why the surplus 390As were destroyed during the cold war. Hams should have been given the opportunity to purchase them instead. Wouldn't it be nice to listen to MW and SW AM broadcasts on a radio that's still considered the best HF...

Need an AM radio with excellent reception

I own every model of Superadio except two - the digital one and the new RCA branded model. All are excellent once aligned well. The older models seem to be less likely to need an alignment. The model III seems to be subject to a lot less quality control by the manufacturer and often needs a...

Need an AM radio with excellent reception

Either the fine tune pot must be very coarse (fast tuning) on your radio or the SSB filter doesn't have a good slope and cannot eliminate the AM carrier. Perhaps those are the limitations you must accept with a portable radio. At least you've got synchronous to work around it. I understand why...

Need an AM radio with excellent reception

That's because the OP wants a radio with good MW reception. I can name several radios costing much less than a TransOcanic that are better on AM. Don't get me wrong, they were and are fine SW radios and some were even the best in their day for the general consumer, but I'll take my TS450 over...
