It is wee bit expensive but you can use Everclear 199 proof alcohol in alcohol stoves, and in a pinch drink it after dilution. the above post showed up after I wrote the reply!
I'm not sure why but the original reason for specifying white gas is that gasoline used to be leaded gas mucks up the systems in camping gear like lanterns and gasoline stoves! I would be curious if the current unleaded gas for autos could be used or if the "additives" would still gum up the works.

Pack them out just like you packed them in. Take them to a recycling bin for alkaline batteries or what ever your batteries are composed of. DO NOT toss them into the garbage bin.
I have or at least had a USAF certified for explosive atmospheres 2 D cell light. It appears someone "borrowed" it and didn't put it back in its place so now I need to find out where it is hiding. don't cha love people that "borrow" items and fail to put them back...
Just thinking here but there might be DOT laws prohibiting this due to vehicles behind you thinking a car is about to hit them and taking evasive action right into a head on collision. I would worry about what is in front of you rather than behind you. Just my opinion!
