Help me find a non-PWM headlamp for running

You would have to remove the battery for charging.

    Spark SG3 & SG5 [XM-L2, 1x(R)CR123A, 1xAA] Review

Great, thanks! That helps. I like the memory mode feature, and found it very frustrating (with the ST5) the memory mode didn't work with Ni-MHs. If I understand you correctly, the memory mode works properly with both battery types, as long as you don't remove the tailcap for a long period of...

    Spark SG3 & SG5 [XM-L2, 1x(R)CR123A, 1xAA] Review

Great review, thank you. I'm hoping you can answer a question about the ability of the SG5 to memorize the modes. The Spark ST5 claimed the same feature, where the light would remember which mode you used last. However, I found the lamp would not remember the mode when using AA batteries...

    help choosing headlamp, cold environment

The one that comes to mind is the Surefire Minimus AA. I don't own one, so I can't speak to how easily it is adjusted while wearing mittens, but I have found rotary switches to be better than buttons when my hands are covered. Take a look, I'm curious what you think. Ted

    Spark SD52 Mini Review

Nice review, thanks. My frustration with the ST5 was it doesn't memorize levels with an Eneloop, although apparently it does with a 14500. Does the SD-52 have the same behavior? Or does it really memorize levels with Eneloops? Thanks.

    ST5 mode memory

Yes, the instructions mention this: "AA battery with short term memorization". "Short term" seems to be measured in seconds. For me, it's a deal breaker, I'll be selling mine, I'm afraid. No memorization means I have to wait for the headlamp to cycle through until I get the level I want, and...

Comparing the H51w to other lights

Michman, glad you found some merit to the idea, looking forward to hearing how it works out for you. Bezel is a little tricky as measurements go. The barrel where the black ring of the AD401 would fit is 19.1 mm. The bezel, defined by the silver ring surrounding the reflector, is almost...

Comparing the H51w to other lights

michman, I switched to an H51 from a Petzl XP for he same reasons, but wanted a diffuser. I decided to make one. That project is here: http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?308655-H51-H51w-mod-flip-away-diffuser Short story is it works, but with room for improvement. You can find...

    Zebralight, good in practice?

JordyC - I've used both headlamps for hiking and running, and the H51 absolutely bounces more than the petzls. The fault is not in the lack of top strap on the headband (I never noticed the Petzls bouncing), but in the design and construction of the silicone holder for the H51. Someone posted a...

    Zebralight, good in practice?

I made the same switch and haven't looked back. The centering problem you were concerned about has never been an issue for me; I just don't notice it. I suppose if you are working quite close to your subject matter, you might notice a misalignment, but I would tend to doubt it. I like the...

Post if you've never owned a SF Saint!

Cost. Battery (have standardized on AAs). To a degree, tint. Now, on the other hand, the dial-a-lumen, that I like. A single-AA light with a lumen dial, I could get behind that. Ted

    H51/H51w mod: flip-away diffuser

gcbryan, one of the advantages to the new Fenix design, with its thinner collar, is you may not need a "gasket" (blue cord in my prototype) like I did. I suspect a the right number of turns of electrical tape around the body of the light will provide an exact fit, so the diffuser lies flat on...

    H51/H51w mod: flip-away diffuser

Yes, Fenix changed the design of their diffuser. On mine, the collar was clear plastic; as you noted, they have now switched to a thinner black plastic. I have not yet figured out a way to get the new collar to fit, but that's primarily because I'm still using the older collar design. I cut...

    Zebralight H51f questions

I think I gave up the patent rights when I posted it here, but yeah, if I could get the diffuser material to work well, sure, I'd try selling them. I'm working on another version, let's see how that one comes out. Ted

Diffuser material: Comparison of DC Fix vs Spark frosted lens?

Hey, B0wz3r, can I ask for a clarification on what you said there - I think what you are saying is that your ST5 is more floody with DC-fix and more of a spot with the Spark frosted glass lens, do I have that right? This is the opposite of Phaserburn's experience, so I'm afraid I might be...
