    I've found myself in that situation often too. As you said it is troublesome with the long blocks. You may want to bring a small compass with you, it will probably be much handier than a flashlight.

    Keep it simple, just bright one or two small lights. You don't want to be carrying around any extra weight with all the walking you're going to be doing. I just carry one Photon Freedom on my keychain for those rare emergencies.

    One more vote for Maglite. Like Jim says, they have good service and the quality isn't just reasonable, it is downright superb. The design is robust and timeless.
