XTar X2 charger question

I just got the X2 that Gene sells with the full kit, with my MDC XP-L. It has about every Li-ion cell listed as compatible, except for the 16650 that comes with this light. In fact, my other two smart chargers don't have it listed either.

The chargers recognize it and start charging, and it is in the correct voltage range, but does anyone know for sure if the 16650 is compatible with the typical smart charger? It seems odd that they don't list it with the others.

I don't know, but if it doesn't appear on this page, I'd suggest you buy enough spares to last a while, while you can still get them from some reputable source.

I guess I do know the answer after all. 16650 shows up on my computer on this page, so you'll be fine as long as you can still find them somewhere:

"Li-ion: 14500/14650/16340/16650/17335/17500/17670/18350/18490/18500/18650/18700/20700/21700/22650/25500/26650
Ni-MH/Ni-CD: AAAA/AAA/AA/A/SC/C"

Thanks, AZ.

A girl from XTar had emailed and said they're not compatible with that charger, but I think she was just going by them not being listed in the manual.

Gene emailed back and said it's fine to use it for the 16650.

After searching more, I found where someone asked about it on a forum and others said it's no problem.

I didn't have any trouble finding the cell. KeepPower makes them in 2500 mAh, and illumn has them at a good price. I had already ordered spares.

I think you should always charge the 16650 in the second slot, so that the charger always charges with 1.0A and not accidentally with 2.0A.

Yes, I agree, and that's what I plan on doing. I actually did the first charge in my Nitecore D2 charger, which you can set to a normal or low setting for either slot.

I was thinking about this Xtar - if you wanted to charge a pair of smaller cells, there's no way to set the first slot to 1 Amp. Doesn't really make sense.

When charging 2 "long" cells at the same time (18650/ 17670/ 16650) , Xtar X2 will charge them with 1A each. You don't need to set anything.

Regarding 16650 compatibility, chargers that can safely charge 18650 with 1A can charge 16650 well. Maybe manual writers are just ignorant or simply lazy to use the old 2006 era manual template with reference to 17670 only but no 16650 info.
