I did pull it off and it took the lens cap with it thus destroying the threads. I regret throwing out the diffuser tip, an inside measurement of the diffuser
I have a D20 that is 6 years old now that still works as well as the day I got it. It is still my favorite 2xAA light.
Mine has some outgassing issues that cause an oily film to condense on the inside of the bulb and unfrost the bulb to the point you can see the emitters.
