    Update:
Things are lookin good so far - Kyle rented some expensive equipment to test a new feature (if it works we'll announce it soon). Then we are currently looking into changing the driver to use Pulse Width Modulation for brightness regulation (has many advantages over traditional regulation methods). We'll see whether we can find room and make it work. We expect to know in about a week.

Just saw the thread on this little beauty. This light should be in the Guggenheim! Any idea on when the next run will start. I visited the website only to be awed by the video and then disappointed to discover that the run has ended.

Thanks for the nice words... flashlight took some very nice photos I'll try to add them to the Photo Gallery. Well at the moment we are still adding features trying to make them work... and see what we have ready to be shown at the shotshow. After the show we might offer standard versions (not the cpf hand assembled special versions with better finish etc) which we would produce together with the shotshow orders (if there are any ??). Of course the hand assembled CPF V2s will be our main focus.

Wink2 Update PHOTO of FINAL VERSION

Ok, here is an update of what we have been up to the past couple of weeks. First below is an image of what the final design of the GatLight V2 will look like.

Regarding the multiple brightness levels, Kyle and I had two choices. We could either go with a lower profile version - which would have been harder to assemble, it would have compromised watersealing and would have been in many ways less sturdy and reliable (even though it probably would have worked), OR the other option was to increase the length a bit and have a very clean, and very sturdy and reliable brightness adjustment solution with improved water sealing. With these choices we opted to go for the second solution, as a result the light is about 4/10 of an inch longer. I think we found a good way to integrate it into the design. So the rods are a bit longer, also the battery looks now more balanced since we decided to add the length to the middle section (by mirroring the back).

THEN THE V2 VERSION will have another feature which is pretty dramatic almost too good to be true. To be sure we want to run some detailed tests first (Monday to Wednesday) before we announce it - so stay tuned for an mindblowing update sometimes in the middle of this coming week.

At the moment we are scrambling to get a couple of prototypes ready for the shotshow (having all the new features). For those who will come will most likely have the opportunity to play with this light...

Last week we tested the clicky knob in the back with some rapid prototyping (3d plastic printing) - and it worked beautifully - this knob will feel extremely nice... we still need to play with different spring strength to find the ideal balance of tactile feedback (of the 12 clicks).

Everyone have a great week end.

    Grinser2 GatLight V1 - featured in uk T3 magazine

We just learned that the UK T3-Gadget Magazine has the GatLight V1 featured in their special LUXURY ITEM edition. We are thrilled, and the V1 looks beautiful in the shot as usual (too bad that in the text they got the battery wrong, 123 instead of AA). But being in their luxury issue, on the same page as the B&O HiFi system is quite an honor.

Here is what they had to say - (hope posting it here doesn't violate their copyright - if so anyone please let me know and I remove it immediately).

And this is only the V1 version (which doensn't have all the exciting features of the GatLight V2).

Wink2 Re: GatLight V2 - now with unlimited brightness levels

    allright - here we go...

In terms of regulation efficiency we expect the V2 GatLight to be at least 25% better then the V1 GatLight (which is what we tested so far). This gives you 25% more runtime compared to the V1 GatLight at the same brightness (and less heat as a side benefit).

We also expect it to be better then any other driver.... but this is pending tests.... so I don't want to provide any numbers. Preliminary tests in comparison with some very popular drivers are very encouraging.

The driver we are using has a couple of other advantages. First it is a buck-boost - so it works with primary lithiums as well as rechargeable RCR123s. Also it adjusts itself to the LED - so it's not locked in to a certain forward voltage. Meaning if you upgrade it to a higher bin with a higher forward voltage (f.e. K2), you will really see a difference.

We get some prototype boards today... then we need to assemble them, test them, scrambling to get some V2 lights ready for the shotshow as well as some marketing materials (that is the priority at the moment - so the people showing up there will have a GatLight V2 to look at and hold).

Then the machine shop who is milling out the prototypes for the shotshow - the mill broke down yesterday - so they had to switch it to a different one last night - they hope to send the parts out today, and we hope to have them by tomorrow morning.

Anyway we hope to provide some photos soon (of course also some detailed efficiency graphs to tell you more about our driver).. until then here are some nice renderings....

Here a rendering of the light

By the way the number of parts in this light is 85 - 30 of them are in the driver. Also the back is pretty complex... if you look closely there are a lot of parts.

In this photo you can see the 2 ball bearings that should provide a nice balanced tactile feedback (clicky)

Have a great weekend, and we hope to see some of you at the shotshow.

Ok we did full temperature modelling. This is what the stainless housing looks like when the LED is running at maximum Junction temperature (to get this image we had to cut up an led to model the heatpaths).
What is interesting is that the analysis provides exactly the same temperature for the housing, as when we measure it by hand. We now can calculate exactly what the thermal shut off (or diming) needs to be at max. LED junction temperature.

We'll try to do create a similar picture for the Aluminum and Titanium version when we have some time. More to come - the cross sections look nice too, seing how the heat spreads from the LED through the light....

Anyway here is the eye candy...

    Hi all !

Let me tell you...I don't think anybody will be able to create a flashlight with better design ...as far working time and electronics I can't say much because
I just got involved with that now...But I belive 100% on Walter and Kyle !

Those compelling and sagaciously rendered photos are just marvelous!!

I am absolutely certain this esoteric work with the spectacular simple outer skeletal frame yet with myriad of engineering features will be a hallmark in the portable lighting industry.

Another word, WOW!! This is just awesome.

We got the parts for the prototype units in. Kyle just said they are simply amazing... really really hard to assemble though- not getting scratches into the bars while pressing the bars into the housing - is a pain. To assemble this run is more craftmanship then anything else.

However the result is simply amazing. The rounded curves look like they are liquid the photos don't do it justice at all. The real parts look a lot better then all the renderings we have done.

here is a photo of a half assembled GatLight V2 - now imagine that in reality it looks even better then that. Also the cpf units will get an electropolishing finish on top of that....

By the way for the knob, the V2 units will have an extra fine knurling (the V1 had a rough knurling) - so the v2 knob knurling looks like a satin finish.... more pictures to come tomorrow...

I also just saw the thread on this great light. This is an ergonomic tour de force. Can you tell us when the next run will start ? I have read through this thread and was ready to sign up and then became disappointed when I realized the run had ended.

    Thanks, Cliff

Hi everyone... we currently show the GatLight V2 at the shotshow - unfortunately I have no camera here so I can't post anything until I get back - but many cpf'ers took photos.. which I assume they will post soon.. Also I'll try to temporarily send a prototype Stillphoto's way for some photos...

    - cliffnopus - sorry for the disappointment that sign up is closed - but we are workin on making the light more available - first priority is the hand assembled cpf run for the V2 - since those are the ones that funded the V2 - maybe we can get a larger production run (with off shore assembly) going during the same time.. we'll see....

Ok, no more renderings, here we go - the first photos of the GatLight V2 - however we still need to tweak the driver... so we still have a lot of work to do. Those who came to the shotshow had the opportunity to play with the prototype...

Sorry for the bad photos... we'll have the units sent to the electropolishing place, then I'll send a unit out to Stillphoto so he can take some real pictures. This unit is without the electropolishing, and has the black hex screw look. Enjoy!!

All the photos, detailed specs as well as the renderings are available at the GatLight website.
