This question was asked in a slightly different form a few days ago...

There have been some experiments with LED headlights, but other than some daylight running lights, no production models yet. I think the per-package brightness needs to go up, or auto styling needs to drift away from the current emphasis on reflectors/projectors before LED headlights will really take off.

The good thing about using LEDs for headlights is you can use a combination of simple optics to get the beam pattern - a mixture of eliptical flood, wide spot, and narrow spot optics would probably replicate a headlight beam quite well without the headaches of needing an all-in-one solution. The profile could be quite low as well - a few inches of depth instead of 6 to 12.

In the EU and in Asia it's NOT allowed to use LEDs in head lamps, it's only allowed in the USA and in Canada.

The talk is that it will be allowed in EU and Asia after 2008, there is a lot of prototypes in use when building prototype cars though.
