Original, first post of this thread:

I thought this might be an interesting thread...

This weekend, I learned how to weave paracord from lighthound's website:

http://www.lighthound.com/info/lanyard_weaving.htm

Thank you Lighthound!

I just think it's amazing, to put on your keychain, a small "fob" that holds up to 8 linear feet of paracord. Who know's when that could come in handy? Paracord is tough stuff, even with the inner strands removed.

At first thought, I remember that poor ******* who got his hand cought between a "rock and a hard place". Don't know his name, but he had a boulder crush and capture his hand for several days while hiking somewhere out west. I remember that he used some rope that he had to make a way to sit down. This was all he could do for several days before finaly amputating his own hand to escape...

So here we go. I hope this hasn't been done before. I've searched CPF and only found a few good folks who are willing to make and sell these little life savers.

Please post pictures of your creations. And describe how you made them, or where you found instruction on making them.

Here is my entry:

This first one is a simple square knot (repeated and repeated). This fob has approximately 4 linear feet of paracord. The paracord has it's inner strands removed.

This second photo is black and white paracord, added up there is a total of 8 linear feet of cord (4' black, 4' white). It was too big to add to a keychain, so I opted to "loop" it. Perhaps this is someting one could cary in their pack, rather than on a keychain...

Also, I did something that I had not yet seen on previous posts... I used a "cord lock" device to finish off my fobs. I think that other here where either melting or hot-gluing the ends to make a finished product. I think the cord-lock is a much better solution. I plan on carying the first fob on my keychain.

Please post pictures of your creations!

Thanks,
Dan

Here's a couple of mine. A few leather ones that I use for knives or small lights:

A closeup of a leather one on my Arc LS, and a longer, paracord one, I use on my Pila GL3 (which doesn't have a split-ring or clip attachment point):

Here's a few I've done.

Cobra Twist in tadgear.com woodland camo.

King Cobra with Knife Lanyard Knot done with dessert camo.

Monkey's Fist with Alpine Whipping (allows for adjusting length of loop and distance of Monkey's Fist).

It's a hobby of mine so they tend to accumulate. I also put them on my flashlights and my small knives like my Boker/Magnum Subcom Folder.

SubcomFSmall.jpg

Instructions on how to make them I got mostly off the innernet, but some from books.

Nice work!

Can anyone point out some good suppliers for paracord accessories (cord locks, end caps, beads, etc..)? I have a local supplier, but they have a very limited selection.

Here's my third and fourth lanyard projects. Again, thanks to lighthound for the instructions on his website.

This is a cross-braid, paracord with inner strands removed:

This is another square weave, but I used something other than paracord. It's like a miniature version of climbing rope. It was a real pain to do because the cord was stiff. I won't do one of these again, paracord works much better:

Thanks for looking,
Dan

Ghost rider : I've been inspired to go buy some paracord just to try some of them. I have one question regarding the King cobra knot.

How do you get the loop in it? Do you use two different strands, or one? I was able to make the knot itself pretty easily from the links that you posted in another thread, but the links did not show how you did the loop for your wrists.

If it is some trade secret or something that you don't want to show me, that is fine. (I think that you are selling these if I remember right)

Thanks.

Yes I am selling them, but I don't mind sharing. I've actually helped others already. Some people measure theirs out but mine isn't so scientific. I've found something that works for me through experimenting. I determine how long I want the King Cobra knot to be (the above example is 2 inches, and the loop is 2 ½ inches), then I add the length for the loop, and usually put a little extra for a Knife Lanyard Knot, and maybe even more cord for a lanyard loop (but not always). Like I said, my method isn't scientific. Best thing to do is experiment to figure out how much cord you need for each stitch (probably should have thought of that one myself  )

In this case the knot plus the loop equaled 4 ½ inches. I find the center of the cord, and measure about 4 ¾ inches from there. That is where I start my knot.

Hope this helps

bruner,
Great thread. Sorry, but I don't use much of what you are asking for. There was a thread on lanyards about a month ago that people were giving that sort of info. I'll try to find it for you, but I remember Berkly Point and the Rain Shed being mentioned.

ghostrider,

Thanks for the link to that previous thread. Looks like some good sources.

Can you post some links to instructional websites? I'm not having much luck finding any.

I'm interested in trying your king cobra and cobra twist.

Thanks,
Dan

Update,

Ok, I've had some luck!

I found this site which showed me how to do the monkey fist:
http://www.realknots.com/knots/faqknot.htm

That site has even more info on it's main page:
http://www.realknots.com/knots/index.htm#bends

ghostrider,

My goal tonight was to figure out how you made your Monkey's Fist with Alpine Whipping. I think I got it:

Very cool, I had no idea how complicated this stuff can be. I ended up putting a marble inside the monkey fist, only because I couldn't seem to do it with no marble (ie. round object inside...).

I'm not sure though, that I got your Alpine whipping correct. This may sound strange, as I'm not sure of the terminology... Does the coiled up part of your alpine whip (hangman's noose, I'm assuming...) slide up the cord, OR does the alpine whip remain stationary in relation to the monkey's fist?

Thanks,
Dan

I don't use a center object in my leather monkey fists. I've made them like that with nylon cord also, but it's a bit tricky and the results depend on the type of cord you have.

I've done them with the marble in the center, as well as without the marble.

I also prefer to do them without it because they just seem to cinch up better without. Of course that could just be to my lack of skill in that area.

I have several 'knot' books and I think they all have the monkey fist in them, one even has 3 different ways to tie it. And I've seen the same instructions online, but I still haven't got it down, when I go to tighten everything up, it ends up screwed up. Hehehe, frustrating to say the least. I've just been sticking to what I know as pictured on my blog page.

Here's a couple more I did after reading another thread.

This one has the inner strands removed.

This one does not have the inner strands removed. It also has a little over 15 feet of cord.

offroadcmpr,
I took some pics of the process you inquired about. I will try to post them later.

I think that I may have figured it out
I start out by tying the knot on over itself. So the very first part looks like this.

Then I just do the regular stitching until the end. Then I finally figured out the lanyard knot, it was much harder than the cobra stitch for some reason.

cool. Thank you.
