hi, How do you tell the model of Surefire tailcaps ? Cannot find any label or marking to indicate the model. Thanks

AFAIK, they are not marked. You have to determine by type (clickie or twistie), color and series (C, E, M etc.) what it is.

For example an HAIII, clickie with a rubber switch protector for 6P, D, C, Z and M series is a Z48. In black it is a Z49.

If you can describe what you have someone can tell you the number. Also pictures and info on SF's site and Lighthound.

Thanks for the info and photos.

I want to be able to
a) glance at a Surefire and tell whether it is a clicky or twistie and its part number.
b) visit a Surefire dealer and said I this item part # (not having to describe the colour, features, etc)

Well being able to identify SureFire components and parts comes with practice and experience.

Most TailCaps that can be ordered by themselves have a "Z" number.

Perhaps this thread can be used to post photos of all known Z TailCaps.
As well as those which don't have a Z number (such as the U2 TailCap, the K2 TailCap, the E2d TailCap etc).

I should really write this down somewhere...

Z14 TailCap (Classic) Three parts (for Standard Bodies)
Z21 TailCap Closed End with Ring attach point (for Standard Bodies)
Z23 TailCap Diaphragm Sealed (for Standard Bodies)
Z31 TailCap Group (for Standard Bodies)
Z40 LockOut TailCap - BK (Not Waterproof)
Z41 LockOut TailCap - BK (Waterproof)
Z48 Clickie TailCap - HA (for Flashlights)
Z49 Clickie TailCap - BK (for Flashlights)
Z52 LockOut TailCap - E Series - HA
Z53 LockOut TailCap - E Series - GM/SG
Z54 LockOut TailCap - E Series - BK
Z57 Clickie TailCap - E Series (HA)
Z58 Clickie TailCap - HA (for flashlights) COMPACT
Z59 Clickie TailCap - BK (for flashlights) COMPACT
Z61 Clickie TailCap - E Series (BK HA)
Z62 Two-Stage TailCap for A2/L1/L2 (HA)
Z68 Clickie TailCap - ScoutLight (BK HA)

Size 15s a couple questions. First are the clicky caps about the same length as the standard g2n twist cap? Also I just got a G2 and it dosen't have the black rim sticking out the front. Is that a modification? Last will all those tail caps in that photo fit a g2? Thanks

Size 15, Many thanks for that list with description. Good suggestion on posting photos of tailcap. The SF catalog only list optional clicky tailcap available for each light but does not state the model that came with the light.
Your list would be very helpful to newbie like myself.
I am going to print out this list and laminate it.

Does "Lock out tailcap" imply that it is a twistie ?

What is the model number for the old G2 tailcap and new LOTC ?

Would it be possible to identify the model # of tailcap that came standard with each Surefire ?

The Z58/Z59 are roughly the same length as the standard G2 LockOut TailCap.

The "black rim" you are seeing is shadow. They are all standard stock G2's.

All the TailCaps in my photo fit and function on the G2's I have. That was the reason for taking the photo - to show the Clickie TailCap options for the G2.

Will the Z48 still work with the Rogers method of shooting?

I doubt it (I am not a shooter though).

You can remove the rubber shroud. However, I have not found a way of replacing the shroud so I would strongly urge you to consider sticking with the standard LOTC or trying the Z58.

Twistie & Clickie are methods for activating the light output "constant-on"
Both types of TailCap also have the LockOut feature.

The term LOTC started when the Z41 was introduced as an "upgrade" for your standard Classic SureFires (6P, 12PM etc), and the Z52 was introduced as an "upgrade" for your E1/E2.

Model numbers (such as a Z number) imply the item can be purchased as an accessory or consumable.
Part numbers imply the item is not sold (there are some exceptions).

The G2 TailCap (and now the LockOut TailCap) do not have Z numbers. I believe this is because the cost of such a TailCap would be too close to the cost of a new G2 that it would not be worth it. It would be better to buy a new G2 and then use the old G2 as storage for the 'spare' Lamp Assembly you now have.

So...which SF tailcap would be the correct clickie to fit an old style (round bezel) 6P in black?

Aren't the U2 and Z59 tailcaps the same?

Monty

The U2 Clickie TailCap is the same as the Z58/Z59 TailCap except that the U2 TailCap is Hard Anodised Black.

The Z58 is natural HA
The Z59 is standard black anodised (not hard)

If you notice in my photo showing the Clickie TailCaps the one I had labelled as the Z59 is not a Z59. It is Black HA and from a U2 (I do not have a Z59).

Al, Thanks for the excellent tailcap info. Have you heard whether the Kroma will be available in both HA bk and Natural HA?

So is Z41 the standard tailcap for the old style 6P's? Also what about the LOTC HA version? I hear this is pretty rare switch. What number would that be?

The Z41 is the LockOut TailCap used by the current 6P/Z2/9P etc.

The Z41-HA is the LOTC used by the M1/M2/M3/M3T/M4 and C2/C3.
It is not rare at all.
If you don't specify "-HA" the Z41 you order will come in standard black.

That I'm aware of there are no 'non-LockOut' TailCaps in HA.
