What's the brightest ~8V bi-pin I can buy?

I want to modify the bulb assembly of a Microfire M3 (LEDS plus halogen bulb) by removing the existing blown bulb from the assembly, removing the regulator, and direct-driving a new one from rechargeable cells.

To do that will require a very bright bulb able to handle those cells off the charger in the 8V range. Any candidates?

There's also Fivemega's axial filament bulb if you prefer a rounder spot. Like the 1274 it's usually used with 7AA NiMH.
