What is the difference between a star and a emitter. It appears that the star has the larger surface area for heat sinking and for epoxy. Why would you use a emitter except for space reason if the star and emitter are the same? Is it worth the trouble to remove the emitter from the star or is that a no-no?

It appears that you already understand stars and emitters. Many people remove the emitter from stars if it suits their purpose. If they can only find a particular bin LED in 'star' format, they can remove the emitter if they were looking for an emitter in the first place.

Is it worth the trouble? Depends on your emitter removing skills. It's pretty easy. Some lights have a 'star' setup and some lights require an 'emitter' setup.
