Apparently, there is something about absolute current, not referenced to Ah capacity. The newer 2.5Ah and 2.7Ah cells do not do any better than a 0.85Ah NiCd when it comes to 5A load.
My cells dropped to an average of 1.05v per cell fully charged when they're under a 5A load, driving a 60W light bulb through an AC inverter. To make the inverter run reliably, it takes 12 cells in series.
Sub-C or D is the way to go if you need the current.
