I made a modded Maglite 2D with a Lux 3 TV1J, Downboy 1000 and 6AA NiMH last summer and I would like to know if someone has a good way to know if the batteries are low without removing them from the flashlight? 6AA NiMH should be considered empty at 6V total and the converter fall off regulation at the LED VF which is around 3.27V. Would it be better to not wait for low batteries and charge often?

Thanks

Yes it would be better to charge early. The Downboy will take those cells too low, and some will probably even reverse charge before the light dims noticeably - which is bad for cell life of course.
