Are there any led upgrades for a 6 cell mag that do not use dummy batteries? Something other than the dim nite ize

Hello Dorkwheeler:)

Welcome at CPF:grin2:

I would go with a Trilux III (U-bin) mod and a Fatman driver, reflectors and UCL-lense. With 6x nimh-cells you get a superb runtime and a great output.

Best regards

How good are your soldering skills?
A Hotlips, + a Luxeon5 bare emitter, + a 5 watt rated 1.5 ohm resistor should just about do it.
That, and a 5/64ths allen wrench to dis-assemble the maglite with.

In fact, I do take a 6D with a Luxeon5 surgically installed this way in it, to work with me every day on my daily hotshot trips to Houston and back.

On a similar note, what would be a good LED conversion for my 4 D cell MagLite? Should I wait for MagLite to make a replacement head? or is there an inexpensive drop in unit out there now?

I'd just wait until Mag's drop-in replacement LED for incans becomes more available.
I beat a 6D stock incan last night with my 2D LED version.
His batteries had maybe around 2 hours usage whereas mine has over 12 hours on them so far.

I saw this e-mail from an actual person from Mag instead of an automated response. Here's what the schedule looks like:

Here is the schedule we plan to use to deliver our Mag-LED lights: 2, 3 & 4 cell D Maglites in Black will be available in May or June LED upgrade kits for the D cells will be available in June or July 2 and 3 cell AA Mag-LEDs will be available in July or August No upgrade kits will be produced for the AA and AAA lights. The new products will be found in most Hardware and discount stores.

How does the everled compare in brightness to a magled 4 cell with two dummies in the 6 cell?

So you have the final version of the drop-in LED and think it's a good option compared to the other LED replacements available?

I just have the 2D LED light itself. (I didn't have a incan Mag host) But I really don't see their drop-ins differeing much if at all from the LED they use in the "new" lights seeing as a drop-in module is 20 and the entire "new" light with an LED is 33.
The other options are probably gonna run you more money.

I'm pretty satisfied with the LARGE circle of flood coupled with a spot that reaches out there a good ways. It stomps the incans that's for sure.
Like I said, I've got over 12-13 hours on my batteries and it still puts the spot out there. You may discover a 2D might actually be all you need for a Maglite anyways. But since you have a host, might as well use it.

The other replacements might be brighter (can't say for sure as I haven't seen them in action, myself) but it's gonna reflect in cost. And I can tell you these MagLED's are not exactly slouches. I'm very happy with the output and runtime I'm getting. It's a good balance.

At this point, I'm just curious as to what this "September surprise" Mag has coming is. They have all the other sized lights covered, so I'm guessing it's a more pocketable/Solitaire type.

All our regulated modules work up to 9V, so that would include a 6-Cell C or D Mag host :)

I read this on another forum, it's from a thread discussing the Mag LED upgrade for a 4 D-cell Mag Light, is there any truth to it?

The Mag LED upgrade outputs good light for the first 30sec-1min, but then, because of a lack of heat sinking in the MAG LED assembly, the output drops off dramatically... like 50% plus.

Furthermore, the heat build-up is bad for the LED and will shorten the life of the LED substantially.

Bottom line: pass on Mag's LED. It's poorly designed.

In other threads this has been discussed and pretty much fallen by the wayside.

They don't drop so fast and so far as to be noticeable AS FAR AS I KNOW.

I have a 2 cell M*gled running in an 84 cent 2AA with a 17500 Li-Ion, as a proof of concept for running a 4 cell on 2x123.

I just ran it for about 2.5 minutes, and the output MAY have dropped a bit. Still it lit up the other room (shining through the door) just peachy. And this light has less heat sinking than even a M*g!!!

So I wouldn't sweat it!

edit> Oh BTW, the 84 cent light has a pretty great beam with the M*gled! <edit
