Thread: new lathe

    Default new lathe

This is my new lathe. Well it's not new, it is a 1993 Mori Seiki SL-00. I got this about 4 months ago but have not had time to use it.

Keith, in the pictures, made the heads and started the knobs for the SPY.

The LUL was a blast to drive. It is so powerful it could have picked up my big truck and put it on the roof.

    Yea that is a SPY.

It just fit through the door, so I had to put it on Teflon pads and pull it over the steel sheets.

    Just fits.

Lucky your shop is not a basement.

Looks great. Ti bar in one end, finished lights pop out the other.

Data: cool toy (I mean "spy" j/k). I thought you had this up and running since March. Did you ever get the graphics option?

PEU: The cost of one of these baby is ~= 60 spy or 140 NEOCA.

No, they want $6000 to add the graphics option. Not going to happen. I will just use an editor with a back plotting feature.

Pablo, you are just like me, I love to watch videos of machines. I would like to see more pictures of your lathe or maybe even a video. Do you have any pictures from your Neoca turning?

The g-gode editor and backplotter program I am using is very helpful. I have programed the SPY head in it using 8 tools (all there is). The plotter lets me get my ducks in a row before I try to cut air. (keep in mind I am new to lathes). The editor has a DNC mode that lets me transfer the program to the lathe and that I have done many times as I was developing the program. I cut a couple pieces of wax and it is working good. I will make a video of it making the head and get it posted here in the next coupe weeks.

After the wax I will try cutting aluminum then on to titanium. I got a couple feet of the 1" diameter 6al4v bar. Can't really shoot video of the machine cutting metal because it will be spraying coolant all over the stock and cutter.

wow, I see you have bigger plans

Now, It begins with buying tools...

I bought about half year ago a 480mm lathe.

First I startet with 3 - 4 hard metal soldered tools for turning,
then i switched to tool holders with indexable inserts. I bought first the normal cuting inserts, then I discovered inserts for aluminium... its going more expensively the I first believed

    Deal!

You can see a full photo log of my homemade router here

    My lathe? not CNC http://peu.net/mods/mesa4

For backplotting I use Cimco Edit, awesome application! it also has communication capabilities, so you can upload the code to the machine too. And for CAM I use visualmill.

In my case instead of starting in wax I start in wood, mostly because I don't have a coolant setup.

    Never machined titanium

    Don,

    Aww . . . for a room in paradise. . . how many air miles do I have. . .

I found this on msnbc today.

    PEU

I have seen your pictures of your router many times. But not the lathe. It looks like you have a nice setup.

I tested CIMCO edit and liked its interface very much. It is a very strong tool for mill work. NCPlot is what I use for my lathe work. It has a user interface modeled after CIMCO Edit! I know, I suggested it to them.

    zelda

I ordered carbide inserts designed for aluminum too and some designed for titanium. Both have a positive rake. Lets see a picture of your lathe?

    This is my lathe:

    Powered with a 3 phase 380V motor.

    And here the sharp things:

its twice the price of a normal insert but you have got a lot of advantages.
I turn aluminium always dry and it works

This is a video of my lathe cutting a wax model of the SPY006 head. It is using 8 tools cutting at a speed optimized for titanium. I can not show you the lathe cutting the titanium because the coolant blocks the view.
