I'm torn between a two paths of building a light:

MMLed[$23]-> short current sensing resistor, add K2[$9], pot with arctic silver[$2], add GITD epoxy[$1] Total:$35

MM[$10]->BadBoy500[$20], K2[$9], FraenLP[$5], add GITD epoxy on optic[$1] Total:$44

I want to do the MMLed path but I'm not sure if it will put out the 500mA+ I want; and if the potting will be enough to take care of the heat generated.

Well, It isn't going to be overly bright. I have 3 bins of k2's that i've tested with a simple boost circuit i pulled out of a LR5 i got from Waion. The only K2 tha was bright working at about 500ma was a L bin i got from litemania. What bin do you have? Do those drivers provide 500ma despite voltage?

I'm currently trying to find a driver to power my K2 at up to 1.5A I basically want like 3 of 4 brightness levels. 1) very low (<100ma) 2) medium ~500ma 3) high ~750-1000ma 4) Burst 1.5-2A.

Not only can i not find a 0.55" driver that will go that high....I can't find something that will let me select brightness levels at those currents in a small package.

This guy can do drivers at up to 1.3A.

I have bought one (750mA) from him and it is fine for me. It may be too big for your purposes though - I'm using it in a modded lantern with a Prolight 5W LED. Runs for about 20hr on a 4300mAh NiMH pack in my application. The driver is about 1x1x0.5" which may be too big for you.

Oops - just saw the 0.55" requirement

Contact Georges80 at taskled.com Maybe a VIP circuit could be modded for the three levels you want.

Bill

Whoops, you want four levels. Contact him anyway.
