Hi guys, new to the HID thing and need to ask a few questions regarding them, especially the Microfires.

Is it true that:

1. More Watts (eg. 10W vs 35W) = much further throw and brighter? (As depicted here? :http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/urltrurl?lp=ja_en&trurl=http%3a%2f%2ffuja.s22.xrea.com%2fhikaku%2f60m%2fhid%2findex.html#jf995s)

2. 10W HIDs cannot throw 100m, or 60m, for that matter, well? As compared to >25W HIDs. (As seen here: http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/urltrurl?lp=ja_en&trurl=http%3a%2f%2ffuja.s22.xrea.com%2freview%2fmaxtel_hid%2findex.html)

3. The smallest belt-carry HID with highest output available is the Microfire K2000R at 24W.

How far can a 10W HID throw?

I'm looking at both the Microfire 2000 and 500 because they are really portable, but I was wondering if any other manufacturer had such types of HID lights?

Currently looking for a HID that is of microfire size and can be mounted on the belt, and has no handles attached to it like the 50W HIDs... Any suggestions?

Input would be appreciated. Thanks a lot!

Hello,

a 500R makes you see things that are even more than 100m away. It is not only a question of Watt or Lumen, it is neccessay to take a look at the optical side. For most things the 500R Microfire is more than I need for my personal use, there are some beamshots in the Microfire Review that may help you.

Throw is probably as closely related to optical configuration as it is to raw power, at least in terms of the narrow envelope of handheld battery-operated lights. Generally speaking, the larger the parabolic reflector, the tighter the beam and thus the better the throw.

It's also difficult to say with any sort of authority that a light can throw XXX meters because a lot of factors will affect what you determine to be throw, such as ambient light, how well the subject appears to be lit, etc.

I have a Microfire K2000R and recently stayed in a highrise hotel on the seventh floor, overlooking a manmade lagoon and surrounded by other tall hotel towers. The nearest adjacent hotel was 289 yards away (GPS measurement) and the Microfire appeared to me to light it quite brightly... enough to see details on the walls that were normally hidden in shadows. I would consider this light to be a thrower compared to my others (mostly Surefires), but the Surefires with Turboheads aren't really all that floody either, at least to me. For close-in work, the Microfire is WAY too much light, enough to make me go "snowblind"! For walking speeds in pitch darkness, my fave light is the Surefire U2. Very floody, bright, but adjustable to dimmer values when the eyes adjust.

Well more watts usually means brighter, but that isn't always true as it depends on a few things.

Given that everything else stayed the same, a 10 watt hid will not be as bright nor throw as far as a 25 watt. But nothing ever stays the same.

I had a Nextorch Saint HID 10 watt that could throw 100m easily and it's about the size your looking for, but they are expensive to buy new now and don't show up for sale used very much.

You may want to consider the Mini Hid from Mac which is still available.
Also if you can find the used MAG Hid 8AA as I did. These 2 give me more throw distance that I can see i.e I can see that it lights up the brick wall or trees over several city blocks away.
Mike Seward will also advise you on several Hid's he carries at: http://www.pts-flashlights.com

If your looking for bright and in the <400.00 range.. look here:
The X990 35 watt (3200 lumens) will drown the AE 24 watt powerlight (1300 lumens).. the only negative is it has NiMh batteries instead of LiIon, but they are built better.

I thought my Inova T4 was bright "at only 100 lumens" I can have someone close thier eyes and shine it in thier eyes and it still blinds them!

The X990, you don't shine in anybodys eyes!

The person that runs this company "Rob" is overwhemingly easy to work with and very friendly and professional.

Thanks guys with regard to responding to my queries and giving suggestions! REALLY helpful input and I'll consider the choices given, though I'm looking at the smaller HID lights.
