Question: does the notion of a "duty cycle" simply have to do with heat and nothing else?

Yes it is to do with heat. When the diode gets to hot, it will cook itself to death. Effects of a laser that is getting to hot is a sudden drop in output/brightness as the diode is redshifting further into the IR and is no longer at the optimal wavelength of the absorbtion band of the crystals. Same thing will happen if it is too cold, though the diode will not cook to death.
