Yeah, I'm sure you are! I've got a 2" deep reflector on one of mine with the extended bezel and....and....well, just guess!! Throws like a bear!! I've got a 3" head in red ordered as well as in line for a Chrome and a Gunmetal Gray so...I can't wait either for some new toys!

HOLY CRAP !!!! Did I say HOLY CRAP ?? OMG !!!

I got the replacement cells from AW yesterday, and the 3" FM3H-2 heads from Varooj today, and HOLY CRAP is this 43W custom Carley bulb AWSOME with this setup.

I FINALLY now have the working batteries and perfectly matching 3" head with the reflector that smooths out the bulb artifacts, and with it's 1500 Ass Kickin' Lumens and throw, it is a most incredible and practical light.

Thanks AW, and Thanks FM for making such a Beast of a Throw Monster....a veritable "BeastMaster" !!!!

It is 16.8 which is used to charge 4 cell packs (4 x 3.7 = 14.8V)

I had this same question because there are technically 8 cells. However, the way to think about this is the delivered voltage from the charger sees it as a 4 cell pack because the second set of 4 is in parallel.

The extra parallel set of four cells just gives more running capacity and more delivered current but still at the same voltage as 4 cells...it just takes the charger longer to charge both sets.

The reason it says "16.8V" on the charger is because like all batteries, they get charged above their stated "average" voltage. A typical Li-Ion with a stated 3.7V output, actually comes off the charger at almost 4.2V (4.2 x 4 = 16.8V), so you would need that higher amount applied while charging to get it up to its capacity...so that is the charger setting to select.

On nother topic reguarding this light, I installed a Kiu socket and after using the light for just 30-45 seconds, the two red wires under the ceramic show signs of melting the isulation. Any ideas on why this is happening?

Yikes....I'm guessing there is too much bulb heat being generated. I did notice in a maglite that I had AWR modify, that he put a shallow "cup" made out of a layer of gypsum type insulator between the bulb and the KIU with a center slot cut out for the bulb pins to insert into the KIU.

That sounds a bit dangerous, and maybe someone can give a reference to where you can get a piece of that insulator material? It's about the thickness of that gray cardboard that is on backs of typical white/yellow paper tablets, and they just folded up the sides to make the cup effect.

PSSHHH...Forget about the burnt wires. Now my concern is the dang litho cells burning my apt to the ground while trying to charge them using the "Universal Smart Charger". I seem to remember questioning the whole cell balancing issue. A few years ago, someone posted pics on Ultimaterc.com of his house after a LiPo fire. (nothing left of it...) Since then, I've been undecided about using rechargeable lithium batts at all. (other than cell phones,laptops and the like) Does anyone know of any chargers that charge the cells separately in a tray or something and balances at the same time? After just one use I'm afraid to use the "smart" charger again.

Well most of the Lithium chargers for loose cells only do one or two cells at a time. I think you can still use that Alin Lithium charger if you follow these guidelines, and stay around during the charging.

• 1) Use protected Li-Ion cells

• 2) Make absolutely sure you know the number of cells you are charging, since some of FiveMega's battery packs are 3 cells Serial (3S), others are 4S, others like the light in this thread are 4S 2P (2 parallel sets of 4S)--which is still considered as 4S in terms of the voltage of 4x3.7V = 14.8V.

Then make sure you are certain which position to choose on the charger for the slider voltage setting, and make sure it is clearly on the correct setting before you connect it to the battery pack.

• 3) Take the battery pack out of the light while charging despite that nice temptation to keep the pack in the light and use the handy tailcap plug. This way you can feel the cells as they are starting to charge to make sure none are getting really hot, or showing signs of smoking.

• 4) Check the voltage of the cells every 3-4 charges to make sure you don't have 1 or 2 cells that are a lot higher than the rest. That means you have to unscrew the pack to measure the cells, but still have the convenience of putting them back in and using the Universal charger to do all 8 batteries if their voltages are "balanced".

• 5) You need to have a backup charger(s) that does individual charging of each cell up to 4.2V to equalize the voltage ("balance") between all of them, which happens when you charge them until individual cell charger shuts off. There is no way around this.

I don't know how often this needs to be done...but IMHO, if I have one cell that is 0.05V higher than the lowest cell voltage, I am going to balance them all. I have 20 of these 14670 cells, and fully charged in my Pila charger, they are all in the range of 4.16-4.18V

I like to use the Pila charger which does two cells independently at 600 mA charge rate. I got two of them, so it goes pretty fast. I also have 3 DSD chargers, but they don't independently charge each slot, so only one should go in that charger at a time. AW sells another charger with independent channels, so that is another cheaper option.

• 6) Ideally, charge your Lithium pack universal charger in the garage (remove flammables) on a cement floor, with some sand to throw on it. That way, worst case scenario, you unplug the charger, and open the garage door for ventilation. No harm to your house.

If you are in an apartment or similar closed space, you could charge them in one of these lipo-bags placed on top of some type of concrete, brick, or ceramic. Then just make sure you unplug the charger and exit the premises if a fire starts. Don't breath in the smoke from this fire, it is very toxic.

I picked one up at Sears, but a quick search revealed this site with quite a number of options - professionalequipment.com. I use mine to test the top, middle, and bottom of each cell at least 2x during the charge. I can also check each slot for variation in charging temps. In my experience, the right side slot in a two slot charger always seems to run hotter. Another advantage to this device is that you can check the temp from a few feet away using the IR beam.
