Thanks for collecting all the info in one place! I'm one of the few here who actually care more about general lighting than flashlights. I also think LED residential and commercial interior/exterior lighting is going to be the big thing with LEDs. The market is just so huge compared to flashlights. In fact, it's this market which is the real impetus behind all the R&D to make more efficient emitters. The fact that our flashlights benefit is just a side effect, albeit a very welcome one.

Same here. Eventually even CFLs will become obsolete (LED prices have to come down first, of coarse).

@ erasmus: We should start a company together someday to bring LED lighting to the general public, starting in Belgium ;)

LEDs are poised to take over the bulk of the lighting market within the next decade.
Can there be any doubt that they will?
Be it Cree or Luxeon or Seoul or whoever, LEDs continue to gain efficiency while
CF and HID are standing still.

That is a very big deal, and it makes CPF a very exciting place right now.

I forgot to mention that I am looking for something simple that could be hidden in a block of wood. All suggestions would be appreciated though.

LEDs do generate heat. Burying them in something flammable like a block of wood might not be a good idea. Make sure you have a good thermal path to get rid of the heat.
Ikea sells strips of 4 LEDs powered off a transformer for under counter lighting. IIRC 2 strips per wall wart.

I'd like to nominate this thread for "Sticky" status. Andy is doing a great job keeping this updated.

If a list of flashlights that use XR-E or P4 can be 'stuck' at the top, I would think this thread is definitely worthy.

Thanks to Andy and all contributors!
Chris
