the maxpedition looks like a good candidate, as i like the functionality and the "tactical" look.

anything else i should seriously consider?

this is mainly to carry stuff to work (ipod and speakers, books, files, occasionally a laptop, pens, etc.).

thanks!

Check www.sfbags.com. Great quality bags and laptop sleeves in a ton of different sizes. Highly over-engineered, like using either airplane seatbelt buckles or paragliding harness buckles on the flaps.

In addition to great quality, great customer service. The owner is a former bike messenger that decided no one made good bags so he would. He often answers the phone himself.

CLC, custom leather craft, makes a brn/black contractors brief bag that is pretty heavy duty for 25 bucks or so. Not sure what you are looking for but it might be worth taking a look at.
