Matching NiMHs to Charger - Critical?

Couldn't find my question/answer in prior posts, so here's yet more ultra-basic charger-related questions from the technically-challenged.

Own couple of NiMH battery/charger combo-packs bought past few years: Energizer 2100 batteries/charger, Sanyo 2300 batteries/1-hour charger and Duracell 2400 batteries/15-minute charger.

My questions:

- Despite mfgrs specifying "use only our charger for our batteries," any real reason why I can't charge Brand-A batteries in Brand-B charger?

- I understand that batteries/chargers in combo-packs are matched for optimum performance. But can I safely charge, say, the 2100 batteries in the Duracell 15-min '2400 charger' without harm? Conversely, will the 2400s efficiently charge (albeit longer charge time) in the '2100 charger?'

Thanks!
