    Default PT EOS Cree/Seoul mod

I have been doing some research trying to figure out the right combination components to use in modding my PT EOS.

There is alot of information scattered over multiple threads depending on which emitter/reflector combo you're using.

I plan to use McR18 reflector to provide a nice beam. I understand I will have to shave off a bit(1.25mm?) to make this fit.

As far as emitter I haven't decided yet. In combination the McR18 I am wondering if anyone has used a Cree XRE? I would prefer this over the Seoul, but realize the seoul may be easier to work with and get a good beam. Anyone have any input on this?

I have one modded with a Mcr17xr and a cree star. removed about 3mm from the front of the mcr. a bit of a dark ring but overall very useful.

I have another eos on the way I plan to put a seoul star and the 20mm seoul optic or the 17mm seoul reflector from photonfanatic. If you want to hold off a few days, I can report on the results of this one as well. maybe with beamshots.

I have 2 modded with a P4 star and one of those khatod reflectors, all from Photonfanatic.

I recommend it cos its an easy mod and is a light-blaster!!

I use it every night around the house, very useful beam.

Did you have to trim the reflector, or did you simply replace the star and drop in the new reflector?
The Phaser: A nice EDC with great throw; heat and runtime can be issues.

Well I'm still waiting on my Seouls so I haven't done the LED swap yet... However i ended up with an L1P reflector now available from fenixstore and tried to put it in the EOS...

    PERFECT FIT!

Fits right inside the optic retainer. The only thing you have to do is sand down some ridges inside the retainer to get the reflector to slide all the way in... After that it's set! Everything holds itself together and stays focused correctly with no glue or anything else.

Great beam from the Lux III with much improved spill vs. the optic. No rings or anything. We will see how it does with the seoul.

You might need to make sure the opening on the reflector will suit the LED, my ones from Fred have a larger opening to match the larger dome on the SSCP4 star.

Part of the fun of modding is just that - to MOD!

I'm sure you could make nearly anything fit.

I can easily enlarge the hole for the P4 if need be.

I do have a kathod reflector on the way... it's in the same package as my p4s... USPS seems to be a little slow

    Also got it from fred.

I tried the Khatod optic and Khatod 17mm reflector and the IMS17 with a Seoul -all from Fred.
The Khatod 17mm reflector seemed to me to give the most useful beam -just a nice bit of spot.
I can do the 3 beamshots if you like.

This was on a pre-modded EOS from Ktronic -with a lux ? emitter.
There was(still is) some thermal tape behind the star to push the optic/ref against the window.

    Cheers

The standard IMS 17 works great with a Seoul P4 in my EOS, and without any modifications, trimmings, sandings, etc. The only problem was that the reflector was not tight up against the front window of the light, and so was not held snug against the reflector - which would allow a donut to appear. My solution was to glue the reflector to the reflector carrier so it wouldn't move about. The beam is great.

I just updated my EOS with an SSC P4 star and Khatod stipple reflector. I broke the heat-sensitive resistor trying to remove it from the lux star. I epoxied an old sanded penny to the back of the SSC star for a small heatsink.

Question: Should I bridge the connection where the resistor was, or should I leave it open to get the full brightness? It seems to work fine either way.

What are you guys finding is the closest reflector to a Mcflood, i.e a smooth flood beam?

The stippled Khatod has a very floody beam. I almost wouldn't call the center a "hotspot", but just a brighter part of the flood.

Does Photon Fanatic have any more 17 mm Stippled Khatods? I thought he was out.

Do you think this would work with a cree?

I just ordered a stippled Khatod from PF earlier in the week, and received it today. I have no idea how it will work with a cree.

Well my mod is complete. PT EOS w/ seoul p4 & fenix lxp reflector.

I ended up using the fenix lxp reflector now available from fenixstore over the kathod from PF. The fenix lxp reflector fits perfectly inside the stock plastic retaining ring, allowing you to use that to hold the star and reflector together. Makes it super easy and slick.

And the beam is PERFECT. No rings or other artififacts.

I will probably do a writeup on this pretty soon.

hummm... very interesting... i didn't even know that reflector was available... even up close there isn't a donut? is the LXP reflector optimized for the SSC p4, or did it just work out to work good?

    Thanks for the info!

    Tibim,
I checked fenix store and all I found was the McR-18 Joker, a Fenix LxD reflector, and a modified (stippled) Fenix LxD. Did you use one of these or did you find a Fenix LxP there as well?

    Thanks,
    Kippers

The beam is absolutely perfect(no rings or anything, nice hotspot + great spill) unless you get really close with the light... There is a small donut when you are closer than 3" or so... The same as this reflector behaves in the fenix lights. On a headlamp this is especially not an issue, you are never going to have your headlamp closer than 5" to whatever you're trying to look at. It just doesn't work since your eyes are so much lower than the light source. Besides, even if using the light off your head to inspect something at a very close distance... it's not like the donut is an unlit spot.. there is still light there, just not as bright as the surrounding area.

Don't know the dimensions of the reflector but like I said it fits perfectly into the PT EOS plastic optic holder(You do have to spend 30 seconds to file off some notches on the inside of the holder but that's it). Also mates up perfectly with the "lens" on the housing. No gap between the lens and the reflector both in depth or circumference. Like I said perfect fit, once assembled it looks like it came that way from the factory.

The link to fenixstore that chevrofreak posted is indeed the reflector I used in this mod.

    That sounds really nice tibim.

I have a cree star with a drilled out, filed down IMS17 reflector. The beam pattern is decent, not that great, a bit ringy. I have just modded the stock star retainer and also added some writeright pda film. Fit and finish is nicer now, and the beam is pretty smooth with good spill.

I'm jealous, I got my cree star before the seouls were widely available.

Oh well, maybe next time. ANy pix and beamshots?
