interesting!

as it happens I have a few of these lying around, but at one point they were marketed as DVD holders! (with plastic DVD sleeves inside). Size for the DVD ones is a bit larger (longer and deeper, same width).

no doubt at a higher cost than you got, though I don't remember the exact cost.
