Good choice for a light.
A very good choice for batteries would be Sanyo Eneloop, Ray-O-Vac Hybrid, or Sony Cycle Energy NiMH cells. Everybody has a favorite charger, so you'll get a lot of different recommendations. I have several chargers, and my favorite simple one is the Duracell CEF80NC. Among its several advantages is that it charges cells more fully than a lot of others, yet it charges them pretty quickly.
[Edit] - Sorry, I'm always confusing the L2D with the P2D. As coppertail pointed out, the P2D is a CR-123A light. So this doesn't apply to the OP's question. I'll leave it here, though, in case anybody stumbles by who wants a recommendation for a light taking AA or AAA cells. My apology.
