Thread: How to upgrade a Surefire G2?

Default How to upgrade a Surefire G2?

    Hello all,

What is the best way to convert a Surefire G2 to use rechargeable batteries? I know Surefire makes a conversion kit using an extention tube and a B65 battery.... but is there a way to use rechargeables with it without resorting to using an extention? I'd like to keep the light the same size as it is now.

Also, which LA upgrade do you think is best for the G2.

    I'm thinking about a Lumens Factory HO-4

    Or

    D26 Cree P4 LED

    Thanks Guys!

Keep in mind the G2 can't transfer heat with the nitrolon as well as the metal lights, so a really high output light assembly might not be best in the G2's shell.

As for rechargeables, protected 17670's might work if the inner diameter of the body is wide enough. the first two numbers represent the diameter in milimeters, and the next two are the length in mm, and the last number is the shape I guess, 0 meaning cylindrical(I think).

A charger will be needed, of course, but I can't help you much in that category.

As for the lamp assembly, do you want long runtime? high-output? It will be easier to figure out what LA you need if you say what you're gonna use this incarnation of the G2 for.

I didn't mention this, but if you add a one cell adapter to the end of the G2 you can use 17500's, which are 1.5 times the length of a 123 cell. with an LA that can handle 9 volts, this setup can be run on primaries or rechargeables without swapping out the bulb. 7.2V on the two 18500's or 9V on the three 123's. The lighthound cree drop-in can do this, and pretty sure others can as well.

Also, if color rendition is an issue for you, you might want to seriously consider LED's or Incans, because LED's generally have a cooler(bluer) tint than incan which have a warmer(orange-reddish) tint.

    Hope this helps a little!

I'm going to be using this light for law enforcement purposes.... so long run time and good output are both very important.

Didn't think about the heat issues with plastic body. Perhaps I should use a 6P as a host instead and then modify that?

A 6P would be a good choice. It'll also be more "Drop/Tumble/Throw/Smack/Bullet resistant" than the Nitrolon body of the G2. You also could go to a 9P and then have 105/200 Lumens standard. (200 is with a P91)

I think the 6P would be a better host choice. That's where I kinda messed up, the accessories I have work better on a 6P or other like metal light so my G2 get's no accessories for the time being

Well, since you say runtime and brightness are important(kinda a no brainer for LE purposes, but ok) I would personally not go with a 9P. If you want runtime, the high output LA(P91) is the greatest at runtime, it burns through three batteries in 20 minutes. I think I would go with a 6P host, then go with a drop-in. Or, if you want to save on shipping or something, I think the 6PL would be a good choice. Good ouput(80 ish lumens) and good runtime(10ish hours), even though the regulation at 80 lumens is only for 3 hours, but still pretty darn good.

One thing is if you're mounting it on a rifle and go incan, or want to be really safe with an LED, you might want to consider going with a shock isolated bezel. That means if you go with the 6P and the P60L(stock LA for the 6PL) you will have to purchase a SI bezel separately. One such bezel is the Z32. Not sure what finish it has, but I think it will match the 6P. Keep in mind that metal parts are generally heavier than the nitrolon, but imo almost imperceptibly so.

Not sure about the rechargeable stuff for that setup, but in any case, it would be good to have a couple sets of rechargeables setup for use, and then have a stock of primaries, just in case. One thing is you don't want to drain the batteries differently, so don't take used batteries from different sources and put em together if you don't want them to go boom(detonation )

    Hope this helps,

The G2 should be fine with a Lumens Factory LA and a 17650 cell.

the LF HO-4 and a 17650 cell from AW.

I think you will like the results, I might also recommend getting a second G2 and leaving the standard LA using a 3.7 volt battery.

Where do I get a 17650 cell? I'm having trouble locating one.

actually its probably listed as a 17670 cells AW cells them on this forum at least he used to. Make sure you get protected cells.

you can get 17670's on lighthound's site. and yes, GET PROTECTED CELLS!!!!!!! way easier to maintain and use.

The only problem is that protected cells cutoff voltage instantly, effectively leaving you in the dark. This could be a serious problem in law enforcement.

As far as a bright upgrade with decent runtime, what about the Malkoff Cree drop-in?

Well, you could just carry another light. Maybe you could use unprotected cells if you want to have that little extra bit of maintainence.

Where do I pick one of these Malkoff Cree drop-ins up?

    Link?

    Thanks

He makes them in limited runs, so you have to check back frequently. I just bought one from another CPF'er and it's a nice addition, very bright!
