You must be gutted about the brass wee going missing.

Would it be worth writting to the post office and offering a reward to anyone who "found" it and handed it in ??

Tempest UK08-04-2007 03:42 AMRe: Wee New light From Lummi (Part 2)

Having used the Wee for a bit now, and compared the output to some of my other torches...I'm having a hard time believing it is 50 lumens  It is a LOT dimmer than my HDS B42...more comparable to my Orb Raw on low (15 lumens) just slightly brighter. Certainly seems more like the 25 lumen version. I didn't specify an output when I ordered, but that was when it seemed that all the units being made were 50 lumens

Isak Hawk08-04-2007 04:27 AMRe: Wee New light From Lummi (Part 2)

Maybe it's 50 lumen before loss due to optics and temperature and such?

I hope it is the 25 lumen model you have, im anticipating good things with this light when i get it. I do hope im not dissappointed. I have the 80 lumen model on the way. :sigh:

Tempest UK08-04-2007 05:02 AMRe: Wee New light From Lummi (Part 2)

I'll try and get hold of a camera to post some beamshots compared to a few other lights. Hopefully someone else (25/50/80 lumen versions) can do the same.

Bear in mind the small reflector, allot of the lumen's are in the spill.
Tempest your Wee NS is 50.

:thanks: Sasha for starting a new thread

Tempest UK08-04-2007 05:28 AMRe: Wee New light From Lummi (Part 2)

Thanks for the clarification  Don't want to give the impression I'm not happy with it...quite the opposite :D This also makes me want the 25 lumen version, funnily enough :)

Hodsta08-04-2007 05:49 AMRe: Wee New light From Lummi (Part 2)

Just has a thought - it looks like the Wee should fit in the Surefire SC series of spares carriers - if anyone who has both SC and Wee could check and confirm that would be a real bonus. Imagine, whole spare extra flashlight in your spares carrier.

Fits just fine in my SC2

DM5108-04-2007 06:17 AMRe: Wee New light From Lummi (Part 2)

I've tried it in an SC1 (the 6-cell one). The Wee fits OK where one of the 6 cells would go, but not in the central recess designed for a spare LA, because there are 4 "fins" there to grip the LA. However, it would not be difficult to drill out these fins, and then it would fit there very well.

BytorJr08-04-2007 10:00 AMRe: Wee New light From Lummi (Part 2)

Anybody have beam-shots?

Thanks.

AFAIK all the initial batch were 50 lumens... I have an Orb Raw and a Wee and the Orb Raw on low (15 lumens) is not as bright as the Wee but it is floodier so may not appear as bright!

Should fit anywhere that takes a CR123A cell - think a CR123A is a 16340 - i.e. 16mm diameter x 34 mm long - the Wee is 14.5mm diameter (widest part) x 34mm long.

BugOutGear_USA08-04-2007 03:06 PMRe: Wee New light From Lummi (Part 2)

Anyone know if you would be able to fit a Luxeon Rebel in there?

What about some pics from you guys that have the Wee already. Just to keep me going till i get mine.

Anyone charged their 10180s in the nano charger yet? How long did it take?

kooter08-06-2007 09:29 AMRe: Wee New light From Lummi (Part 2)

Got my Wee today. :grin2: Holy crap i knew it was small, but its not till you get it in your hand you realise how small. :faint: It is bright, but the beam is all spill, so it wont appear that bright until you look at the LED. Yeah i do it every time. :duh2:

Fits fine in the SC1 instead of a cell but will also fit in the central recess bulb carrying part if you drill out the fins.

Didn't measure the current and I don't know how flat the cell was but it charged for about 40mins before going green and it didn't get even slightly warm. I feel happy charging it in this charger.

Why it is that you do not make a flashlight that uses the small N cell? That way you wouldn't have use a rechargeable battery and it would be a lot easier to just throw a new one in and be ready to go. It would still be small.

Because a 1.5V alkaline N cell would require a boost circuit to drive the LED while a 3.7V (4.2V peak) Li-Ion cell can drive an LED directly or with only a simply resistor in series. The boost circuit would require space and make the light larger. Also, the tiny 10180 Li-Ion cell is much smaller than an N cell.

Trashman08-06-2007 11:53 PMRe: Wee New light From Lummi (Part 2)

Who's going to be first to post a picture of the Wee next to a Draco?

Also, how are you guys charging the battery? Does it come with a charging spacer?

... and more environmentally friendly than the 500+ primary cells you would use! :D

I charge my batteries using a small charging clamp and an Orbit Pocketlader charger but the Nano (AAA/10440) charger with charging magnets / spacers is supposed to work fine (and is a lot cheaper!).

Rob isn't really designing these for the regular consumer market but more for the specialist collector/enthusiast market. Let's be honest, who else would pay £41 up for a tiny keyring light. He is attempting ( and in my view succeeding ) to get the maximum light output in the smallest size possible with the simplest form. All this packaged in a very well designed and top quality product. To use an N cell would require an additional electronic circuit, would double the size of the light due to the circuit and the larger cell, and it would be unable to produce 80 lumens or, I suspect, even 50 lumens due to the N battery not being able to supply enough current.

You mean the elitist amongst us? In that case have you bought the new Surefire "The Beast" yet? At 7,000 USD it should really impress! Whoops, I just checked it is on sale now at some places for 4,500 USD, sorry!

Thanks to whomever supplies. I got the 25 lumen, but I'll be happy with a 50 lumen shot too :).

Isak Hawk08-09-2007 07:14 AMRe: Wee New light From Lummi (Part 2)

My Wee NS 80 arrived today :grin2:

It's tiny!

My lummi collection so far:

Mcgizmo's for size reference (not really though, I'm just showing off ;) ):

I'd say it's a little dimmer than my T-bin Raw NS. The hotspot isn't very tight so it doesn't appear as bright as it actually is. The threads are by far the smoothest I have ever come across, nothing even comes close :twothumbs

This is an amazing little light, great work Rob

It's actually just oxidized, I thought they all looked like that after a while? I haven't been EDC'ing it much, so the oxide layer hasn't rubbed off; I guess that's why it's so thick. I like my matte NS :D
Now what's this I hear about sandblasting? :p

Isak Hawk, We have sandblasted a few. Which do look good, but I still prefer the finish straight of the machine.

brotherbob08-10-2007 07:45 AMRe: Wee New light From Lummi (Part 2)

So if I order a Raw CR2 version off of your website it will have the new led? Is this a much improved or just a small change? Will it affect the lumens or runtime or is it just a better tint or something. Uneducated in these things, just want the best I can get when I order. I am going to make it one of my retirement gifts to myself. My wife will go nuts when she finds out what she is buying me, even though I am not telling her till after its here.

sideman708-10-2007 03:05 PMRe: Wee New light From Lummi (Part 2)

I just got mine a few minutes ago... Very cool tiny light! My initial impressions of output are that 50 lumens is a bit wildly optimistic though... After testing in a dark bathroom, I would put it at roughly double an Arc AAA-P (with a very similar beam pattern), which is what, 16 lumens? In a bounce test, it seemed to put out a hair more light than my Seoul Exolion on a setting of 4/10. I did test the battery afterward, and it was at 3.9v, so I will charge it so I can give it a fair test. In it's current state, I would say it's putting out 20 lumens max... Regardless, I'm sure I'll find some good use for it!

Is there any easy way of getting the board/LED out so I can swap the LED down the road?

I'll take a few beamshots tonight if I have the time...

brotherbob08-10-2007 03:59 PMRe: Wee New light From Lummi (Part 2)

A couple of you have said you think the 50 lumen is only putting out about 20 lumens, if so what is your runtime. I also read on various threads that the type of throw, flood or whatever greatly affect the measurement of lumens so how do you decide who is right. I have spent 34 years of my life outdoors working, probably 60% at night as a switchmen, conductor for the railroad and know that when your eyes adjust it really doesn't take all that much extra light to really make a big difference. What you really want is an safety light that is ready to go when you really need it. That is why I did not pick the rechargeable one. I will put a lithium battery in the raw and it should be ready to use 6 months, 1 year or suppposedly 10 years a real emergency type of light. This will not be used to impress someone by shining on a white wall or in their eyes.

sideman708-10-2007 04:05 PMRe: Wee New light From Lummi (Part 2)

I haven't used it enough to find out it's runtime yet... And yes, it can be difficult to guesstimate lumen readings when it comes to different type of beam patterns. I compared it to the Arc first since they have the closest beams. I'll try to take some "real use" beamshots tonight.

Here is shot comparing it (size wise) to a few other lights:

I believe the Raw is much brighter with the rechargeable battery than a primary. A primary will give you a lot of runtime though, and is better for long term storage. Your Raw comes with a rechargeable battery and (I think) a charger.

sideman708-11-2007 12:04 AMRe: Wee New light From Lummi (Part 2)

Well, here are some beam shots. It does put out more light than I first thought, but I still think 50 lumens is a stretch... At least with the photos you can see how those lumens are spread out.

After having some time to play around with it, I think Rob had the right idea clipping this to clothing or a necklace. It's a great close-up light, and when I hung it from my necklace, it was unobtrusive and in just the right place if I needed it.

All photos taken at ISO 100, 3.2 sec, f 5.6 and Daylight WB.

Yes AFAIK the Raw is a lot brighter with the Li-ion rechargeable (than primary) and the self-discharge of Li-ion rechargeable should still mean it is good for fairly longer term storage and of course you could always jus recharge it every 6-12 months anyway (and keep a spare cell).

DM5108-11-2007 02:05 AMRe: Wee New light From Lummi (Part 2)

Lithium primaries last longer and have a slower rate of self-discharge than other chemistries, and have a 10-year shelf-life.

Of the rechargeables, Li-Ions are the best for low self-discharge. It is not recommended to store them fully charged, but if charged to a maximum of 4.1v they will be undamaged and will retain ~95% of the charge after 12 months.

All batteries should be stored in cool, dry conditions. Heat and moisture will accelerate self-discharge.

Raoul_Duke08-11-2007 02:05 AMRe: Wee New light From Lummi (Part 2)

While these do look nice, are the 80 lumen versions pulling 3.8C. on the tiny cell?

Because the Cree P4's are supposed to put out 80 ~ 87 Lumens at 350mA

I think Even with the new Q4's it would still be 3.1C to get 80 emitter lumens?

Or is my maths all messed up?

Because the Cree P4's are supposed to put out 80 ~ 87 Lumens at 350mA

I think Even with the new Q4's it would still be 3.1C to get 80 emitter lumens?

Or is my maths all messed up?

Is this the case, Or do I have it all wrong?

Mine's here!!! Wooohooo!!!

Ok, not only did I get a Wee, but the Orb as well.

First of all, since this is a Wee thread, let me say mine is a 25 lumen model. I thought about this for a while and decided for keychain type use longer runtime is probably what I was looking for. Thinking if I get stranded somewhere I may just need more than 25 minutes of light, plus some reserve since it would more than likely not be a full charge on the battery. It's a little hard to turn it on with one hand, being that it's so small (and my thread's are a little stiff - could be the o-ring); but that doesn't bother me. It's so small, it will never feel like I've got a boat anchor attached to my keys.

Let me just say, this light kicks!!!! It's brilliant, spot-on for EDC use.
Beam shape is about perfect for this style of light..ok, it is exactly as I'd hoped. Spill with some throw. My initial backyard trip with it with unadjusted eyes proved to me this was a good choice for lumens too. I could see about 40-50 feet in front. More than adequate.

I'll do a real review in a few days on the full CPF, but if anybody's on the edge with this light...don't be scared. It's a marvelous piece!!

Rob, thanks for making this critter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can I leave the battery unattended during charging process?
How much time will full chage take?
How I know the baterry is full charged?

Thanks to shot out my doubs.
This wait is hard:naughty:

Ti Wee, 80 lumens arrived yesterday. Made it from UK to NC in less than a week, with Labor Day in between. This is a great light, perfect for a keychain. Couple of questions. Does anybody use a split ring with this light? What type are you using? How do you carry a spare battery since they are so small.

Lets get the Wee on the website so I can order one plus another raw CR2. It will be easier to order when I can see exactly what I will get as I order. I am unsure about the magnets used for charging on this nano thing. I will wait to order when it is in writing what comes with it and what I need. I have three magnets I think from the first CR2 I ordered.

I don't understand how having multiple short threads is preferable to having one very long, yet complete thread ???
