Thread: Favorite torrent client?

  1. #1

    Default Favorite torrent client?

Well for about the past year I've been using Ares to handle torrents, and it has worked fine. But it does suffer from somewhat slow DL speeds and I can't disable uploads. Does anybody have any recommendations for a torrent client which allows for faster speeds and disabling of uploads?

Does all I want it to do, and it does it with elegance, simplicity, and a tiny footprint. Try it, I doubt you will contemplate anything else.
BTW disabling uploads kinda goes against the spirit of things. You wouldnt be able to download anything if everyone disabled their uploads! ;-) I aim for at least a minimum of 1:1 ratio, if I need to delete or archive the material.

+7 for uTorrent, if you can disable uploading, your downloads will become dog slow.

A great app. I find 15KB minimum upload rate is necessary for it to not bog down.

Ummm, your disabling of uploads is probably why your downloads are so slow.

Wow I'm surprised theres no Azureus for PC!

I personally like all the customization features on Azureus. It is the fastest application that I can configure. I tried utorrent and bittornado, but my speeds were about 2x less than Azureus.

Azureus runs in Java, so you just need to install JRE for Windows (or any other OS) and Azureus will be fine. You do the same for Mac, except that the JRE is preinstalled, IIRC.

Have you tried port-forwarding, configuring the tcp connection attemps, enable the three networks, set the file priorities to high. Also, I tried lowering the upload speeds and disabling them in other torrent applications, but I found that by doing so I have unreliable and almost no conneciton. I use this guide to configure my upload speeds.

I am forced to limit my upload to 10Kb/s since the computer is on a router and shares bandwidth with 2 other computers....some unknown reason my router resets connections whenever I exceed 40kb/s

but when I'm the only computer on...upload is ALWAYS AROUND 35kb/s

IIRC, Azureus doesn't strictly follow the bittorrent standard. There's something non-compiant about it.

I had better throughput using utorrent, and have stuck with it since.

    A friend favors Bit-Comet.

+?? where are we? -- For uTorrent. You'll probably need to get uTorrent 1.6, though (previous build), as many torrent trackers are not allowing the most recent version (1.7).

I really liked Azureus, which is what I used to use, but it was a little batty in that it wouldn't let me limit my ul/dl rates. I mean, it'd let me, it just wouldn't do it. uTorrent has proven to be very stable, so I've stuck with it. As far as features go, I really preferred Azureus, but that one minor bug switched me over to uTorrent. After a year or so of using uTorrent, I've gotten to like it. It's really easy to use and the scheduler is just so simple to use and so well done. I wish there was a search feature, though, like to search for a particular torrent in my list of torrents, using a keyword (it can be hard to find stuff, sometimes!).

-1 utorrent which I just read about. They aren't going to release the source code. To heck with them. I would never run an application like that without source code.

Oh please. While I like the opensource philosophy, all a torrent client has to do is to download the torrents. Yeah, it'd be better if they opensourced uTorrent (yes, I know it's "microtorrent", but I'm too lazy to look up the symbol), but it's not the end of the world if they don't. It's still a good client.

I used Azureus some time ago. Opensource and good, but a true resource hog. You can't beat the efficiency of uTorrent, not if you want to do something with your computer (especially play games) while you download.

another nice feature of uTorrent is that it can be ran as a portable app. Put it on a USB drive, and plug it into any computer with an internet connection and start (or continue) downloading.

For the most recent issue of 1.7 I know of no trackers blocking it. There was an issue with stats being inaccurately reported back in just a single revision that lasted but a few days. I am running the latest with no problems.

You may lose some features but what you wont miss is the amount of system hogging that Azureus did.

Since utorrent is a PC-based program, you don't have any issues running a non-open source Windows environment, but you have issues with the FREE programs that you run on it??
