Thread: UV searchlamp?

  1. #1

    Default UV searchlamp?

anybody know of a long throw/semi flood high intensity UV searchlight?

the application would be walking a stream at night with orange UV goggle and a UV searchlight to look for minerals that fluoresce under UV light.

need a fairly long run time as well (ie a lead acid battery pack)

MY EDC: JETBEAM M1X - it replaced 8 other lights.

I don't know of one, but I expect such a thing does exist. The problem would be safety - intense UV light is extremely harmful to eyes, and a super-powerful UV source would probably be classified as a dangerous or prohibited article in some places, as is the case with some lasers >5mW.

If you got hold of one, you would need to 100% sure no-one else was in the area when you were using it.

Maxabeam showed a UV version of their flashlight in their product videos on their site. They said it could be used for forensics aka CSI.

He's not being honest with us. He intends to use it while hunting vampires.

LOL a UV Maxabeam??? For forensics? What are they going to do - examine a crime scene from 2,000 yards away?

Watch the video dude, it shows it in action. It wasnt that bright from the shots they were showing. Of course since our eyes arent real efficient with regards to UV it wouldnt be. Either way, check it out.

Are you looking for a long-wave or shortwave light ? most minerals fluoresce under shortwave.

There are commercially available, battery powered shortwave mineral lamps that typically use a germicidal type mercury lamp with a filter, but these are very-much flood lamps with a short throw. I suppose it would be possible to build a SW "throw" lamp using a quartz jacketed short arc mercury lamp, but this would be a fairly involved project.

SW is the hazardous wavelength, but ordinary glasses will block it

Long wave UV is much easier to come by, all you need is a proper filter in front of an HID spotlight .. Throw and Glow !

I ordered a 6.25" Rosco "woods glass" UV dichroic filter that should fit my power-on-board HID very nicely, just in time for halloween

I'm not sure how beamshots will work with this, but I'll figure out something

(the filter cost more than the whole light!)
