Thread: Data Bank 70

    Default Data Bank 70

One day I was sitting looking at a bunch of Cree LEDs on my bench and wondering, "what can I do with these?" So off I went trying to make something worthy of the black hole.

The Data Bank 70 uses A123 Systems M1 batteries and aspheric collector lenses. The battery packs are made from Mag 4C tubes. The aluminum plate weighed in at 9lb after machining. It is all one piece of aluminum.

    Power Specs:

70 Cree XRE P and Q bin white LEDs
    each LED driven at 1800mA
total power of panel just under 500W
LEDs are three in series to the battery pack
there are two packs of batteries
each pack has normal voltage of 13.2V
33+1 LEDs on battery pack 1 (single LED on an STFu)
36 LEDs on battery pack 2
each pack of batteries is 4 A123 bats in series
each pack of batteries is running over 20A
run time is about 5 to 10 minutes

Later on I took a shot to the face in DB35 mode (I think the batteries in the first tube needed replacing). Not pleasant, but I'm sure it was nowhere near as intense as what you experienced Walt! This work of art is definitely a sight to behold, just better if you are not directly in front when it is powered up.

So, what's the battery life on this one?

Do you need something like Gatling-gun or battery belt feeder?

Thanks for the UCS stick, it will come in handy. I put it right in my small tools toolbox.

I will do a run time test soon but it goes for long enough given the things weight of 14.5 lb.

Maybe you can grill some steaks and eggs for breakfast with it. Is this the LED version for the incandescent "Torch"?

There is a type of perfection that transcends the quest for lumens. Buying a $250 1-cell light for "lum factor" is like buying a $250 single malt Scotch for the alcohol content.

It's amazing, I can tell you that! The shootout with a tank light was a sight to be seen!! Both beams hit the Dark Hole but Data was carrying his weapon!!!

In addition to the blinding light, if you were in the dining room at PF9 when Data fired this up, you could feel the heat from it!

Truly amazing and utterly speechless and totally bonkers!

I think some one is gonna have to build a bigger treehouse.

I don't have any CREES but I got a few mags and plenty of 123s I'll donate just to see how big this monster can get.

Thanks but I have a big supply of the 123's for a non-flashlight project. The biggest problem is charging them individually so they stay balanced.

The 123's are easy to get on ebay and they fit in a C size mag body without boring it but you have to take the paper sleeve off and replace it with thin shipping tape.

What size C Mags do you have? I used 4C but that is not big enough for a normal 4X123 light with three Cree in series. That would require a 5C or 6C Mag body.

    Cheers
    Dave
