Probably either a tank light or other searchlight. Ask BVH - he has some crazy stuff.

Well, I wouldn't call that portable.
Or to put it another way, that's portable like the first "portable" computers, when the word meant "neither bolted to the ground nor chained to a wall".

What about the Megarays 175 (for relatively high portability) and 4000 (for sheer power)? They seem pretty darn bright to me...

It would have to be an HID.

    Maybe the Larry14k.

I'd imagine that the Barn Burner would be among the top 5.

I think the Polarion X1 would have to have one of the highest power to weight ratios.

For something that can be handheld, the DataBnk 70 is hard to beat. It made my 35w HID look like a stock maglite. I believe Milkyspit estimated it at 20,000 lumens on fresh cells.

Why not? It may not be handheld, but it's portable.

Why cant someone make a smaller, more accessible affordable spotlight like the Megaray.

To tell you the truth, I'm having trouble finding the actual Lumen rating of the Megaray. I guess it's possible a 50W HID produces the same or more Lumens though.

Absolutely! Although I was referring to production lights, because most of these mod lights aren't available to us mere mortals. I guess that's a question for the OP though. Production or Modified?

Incredible! Are you telling me that science and technology has not made any improvement in portable lighting since 1942 when these lights were made? Maybe someone should invest a few million and fix this problem.

This thread is almost 5 yrs old. And I'm not sure what you mean by these lights being from 1942.

Anyways, Hope you find the forum a helpful place to learn.

Though to be fair, the Data Bank 70 appears to still hold the title..

I think he means those 12kW carbon arc 800 million lux searchlights used in WW2... BVH used to have one of those i think. And he's right it will trump pretty much any light we've got here, 70 years later...

If that's the case, I'd venture to say that it's because those huge searchlights have been completely superceded by stuff like radar. Why use a searchlight that can only illuminate a tiny fraction of the sky (and needs a person to look at whatever the beam's pointing at) when a good radar setup can monitor so much more and is more reliable. There're probably a couple of exceptional situations where a searchlight might be better, but overall radar > searchlight.

I'd expect that the same is true for other areas that would have needed such big lights.
Finning does help dissipate heat. This is why the fins are removed before cooking fish. Otherwise it will throw off the heat and not reach the proper cooking temperature. --Duglite

I guess, but searchlights still have their uses like in search and rescue/wilderness etc. And not to mention, as flashoholics, it is absoutely awe-inspiring to see such a monster lit up. But in terms of the lumen front, it's still also not much progress, i mean stadium lights still use the same quartz HID technology developed decades ago and the wattages for the most commonly used (1200W General Electric HID) is about the same... The specialty 24 000W 2 000 000 lumens bulbs that Wolfram Lights produces aren't exactly new either. Heck, even the mounting techniques used, single ended/double ended are the same, right down to the pin size...

OP is asking for brightest possible portable light, not mobile or towable. The DB70 specifically uses an integrated battery pack for portability.

How about that 4sevens xm18, has 18000 lumens they say. And it's still pretty portable, should be easily held in arms!
