Default Rayovac PS23-B AA AAA "glow" charger?

It's at my local big lots for $8. It looks like it might charge the cells individually which would be a good feature in such a discounted charger.

Has anyone used it? It's the model PS23-B that comes with two 2000mah AA batteries. I've not had an hits searching the forum with that part number, but it is on radioshack's site for $12.97 at http://www.radioshack.com/sm-rayovac...techSpecs.html

    Here are some pics....

I have it and like it ok. It's a simple charger to gift to friends and family to replace their cheapo timed chargers.

So does it indeed charge the cells individuality? I assume that it actually takes 12v as an imput, do you know what the size of the plug is that plugs into the charger? Being able to make/buy a 12v cable would be great as well.

I have found no useful info about this charger online. Heck, I guess for $8 (plus the two 2000mah cells) it's worth it to try one out.

It comes with the plug/cable. Plug is stamped 12 VDC, 10.4W. I had a spec sheet for it that they mailed to me, but I can't find it ATM.

    Just found the specifications.
    AC/DC Power Adapter:
    Input - 120 VAC, 60 Hz, 25 watts
    Output - 132 VDC, 800mA

I think the output is a typo, and should be 13.2 VDC.

I like it as a cheap 4-channel charger.

Is the charge rate into AA x ? and AAA x ? listed on the back of the unit? Time for someone to place cells of various states of charge into this charger and IR the cells to see if they are indeed terminating charge independently.

    From spec sheet:

Main Charge Current (average value in mA +/-5% per cell)
    1 or 2 AAA 480
    3 or 4 AAA 240
    1 or 2 AA 1300
    3 or 4 AA 650

Average Maintenance Current (average value in mA +/-20% per cell)
    AAA 16
    AA 42

Backup termination timer of 2.5 hours for 2 cells, 5 hours for 4 cells

I have charged dozens of cells of various states of charge though it, and it does indeed terminate channels independently.

Not counting the two 2000mah cells, sounds like it might be worth $8.

I picked up one tonight, will give it a try. I can always bring it back if I don't like it, but as long as it works reliably, I doubt It's going anywhere.

I also Picked one of these up as well.....I also noticed at Biglots, they had a Duracell Value Charger with 4 1800's for $10, as well as 4 packs of Duracell 2650's for $6. Might be worth going back for the 2650's

I'd skip the Value Charger, IIRC its simply a timer-based charger.

And those 1800 cells have been tested here on CPF, and they did not do very well.

Now the Duracell 1700 NiMH cells are a different story. They are quite the overachievers. I've got four of them, (came with the Duracell PowerGauge charger) have been using them for a while, and they still keep chugging along. They are very evenly matched cells.

Those Rayovac 2000s are very solid performers also. (I've got 8 of them).

My PS23 agrees well with my 40+ Hybrids, 10+ Energizer 2500's, 8 Duracell 2650's, 6 Rayovac 2000's, and 12+ Old Durecell Accu charge cells.

I really like it so far, might go ahead and pick some for presents & spares. The input voltage is listed as 10-16v=7w. The wallwart is listed as 13v @ 10.4w.....

I'll second that on the 1700's. Unbelievable what those suckers will supply. As I recal, they crank out about 20% more capacity than their rating. They seem to retain that ability, too, instead of come out of the gates strong then fizzle. Of course, it's moot with Hybrids now, and finding the 1700's now is almost history.
