So earlier today I had an amazing offer and I took it up.

I purchased two brand new (but sliiightly dusty) stadium lights.

Each one uses a 1,500 watt metal halide lamp @ 4,000 kelvin.
Each one uses about 1,700 watts @ 120 volts, although I can use 208, 240, or 277 volts if I chose to.
Each puts out 170,000 lumens.

Amazingly the enormous reflector weighs about 10 lbs. The ballast transformer units are a good... 30-40 lbs.

My cost:

2x @ $25 for the Lithonia ballast units = $50
2x @ $25 for the Lithonia reflectors = $50
2x @ $33 for the Sylvania 1,500 MH lamps = $66

After tax, shipping, and driving 200 miles roundtrip to pickup the ballasts and the reflectors,
about $200 total.

The holy poop that comes out of my neighbor's mouth when I finally fire them up: Priceless.

Flickr pics for now (i will upload them onto my site tonight): http://www.flickr.com/photos/22987103@N07/

I wired one up, and that got the attention of my neighbor. I need to build some sort of stand for it. Problem is it doesnt throw THAT far. Throws about as far as my sam's club HID spotlight, but essentially anything in FRONT of this thing, gets lit like hell. I'll get pics tomorrow night when I have both wired... and circuited properly. Need about 3,500 watts for safety.

Here's a link to the product:

Here's a link to the bulbs:

They look small, but in real life, the bulb is freakin 15" long!

Does that thing come with a shoulder strap:D

Only in America...
( By that, I mean it's doubtful in UK that you could use such a thing in our
congested country & not upset a 1000 other people.:()

Pics would be good.:)

Cheers

Currently wiring up the second ballast for 120 volts as we speak. Came from the factory wired up for 277 volts.

To answer the other question, surprisingly the warmup time is fast. Roughly 3-4 minutes.

It is 3:06 pm. Nightfall is approaching.

I really wouldn't want to see the electricity bill after firing that up a few times a month. Wow.

5:47 PM PST here, hopefully we will will see some beamshots shortly.

[Interesting...My post timestamp indicates 5:39, yet my PC clock was just synced with a local (13 hops) NIST time server prior to my posting of the local time...]

This thread is worthless without pics.

:D

Seriously, I need one of these for the occassional "barking dog" problem. Nothing like a serious flood of light to "draw attention to the problem".

The camera didn't quite do it justice as it overexposed the close areas and underexposed the far areas.

Shutter speed was increased to help reduce glare in the stadium light pics, but decreased to show the frontyard/sams club HID pics.

Now you must design a flashlight body to fit it all inside with a carry handle or handles!!

Thats just COOL!!!
