Thread: SPY 007 machining status

  1. #1

    Default SPY 007 machining status

    mill cutting 007 body

what's left of the 60 lb block are these 6 lb blocks that yield 6 light bodies each

    the first 18

5 blocks ready to go in the mill

the aluminum D1-6 spindle mount adapter I made for my small Cushman 6" 6 jaw run-tru chuck. The runout measured at 0.0001"

The first 30 bodies should be done this week. I will then start on the battery caps and knobs. The knurling tool on the lathe is still finicky. I should really plan a new way to make the knurl pattern.

Though I make no promises I see no reason the first lights will not be ready in April. And the second batch in May.

If you are interested in watching the mill make a 007 body (more interesting than any other part) then now is the time! This is directed at Msax and Dizzy and anybody else that wants to see it in person. Please e-mail me with questions and directions.

    Cheers
    Dave

Thank you for posting machining pictures. Always very interesting to see the process of turning a 60lb chunk of 6Al-4V into your amazing 007's

    Data,

Thanks for the offer!! I'm still trying to work something out, but I've been so crazy busy, I haven't been able to swing anything. This weekend is shot with Easter, but possibly next weekend..... or maybe I have to be sick from work one day?!?!

I've been waiting patiently for some pics and what pics! You spoil us Mr Dave!

Great news on the progress. Which is good as I've bitten off all my fingernails in anticipation and am now down to bare skin - let's hope I get in on the April batch and still have fingers left to use this cool little blighter.

btw - good to see the big hammer in the penultimate pic - I expect that even in precision engineering projects sometimes there is just no subsitute for a big hammer.

The last I heard from Goat he was staying out late as a result of a cry for help received from the distraught wife of an (in)famous Ohio Flashaholic. Apparently the recent cold snap has been playing havok with the runtime of some of her husbands equipment.

Good ol' Goat, selfless to the end!

Ditto - not only is the SPY007 the undisputed (IMHO) Flashlight of the Year but it apparently holds the power to unite bickering loons in friendship.

    Happy Easter from the UK

... I love it when Hollywood types and gangsters try to show how tough they are with guns. The chick in the middle is going to get a face full of hot brass if she pulls the trigger like that! Idiots.

I was there!!! WadaImgonna say? Wow! I took pictures but the only viewable one was of Master Data himself!!! Dave even ended up having to show me some of the features on my own camera! Clearly my second career isn't going to be with National Geographic unless I get posed being swallowed by some beast! Sorry.

I e-mailed Dave following an amazing afternoon of education and entertainment and told him the rumor was that the 007s were being created (baked?) by elves (Santa's, Kiebler's?????)-- well, I sure didn't see any elves running around (Dave's cute kids....but no elves!) and I even checked out the Treehouse just to be sure! Nope, no elves and, didn't see anyone either than Dave manning the controls so, rumors are dashed folks, it's Dave building them!---Starts with a big chunk of metal (Titanium for all of you metalheads out there!), slices off smaller pieces and then, after a pretty fair amount of whirling and splashing and other machine shop-type sounds, a SPY007 is born!!! It was one of the most amazing activities I have witnessed and, and, as I am sure Dave will tell you after hours of first-hand experience with me, I wasn't born yesterday (too much gray, too little hair) so, you can just imagine. Dave and his lovely wife are jaded with the creation of 005s and 007s by this time and liken the process it to watching paint dry and grass grow. Well, that just ain't true--it's more like the movies if you ask me.

Folks, you have no idea of the thrill of the SPY 007 “in person” (notwithstanding Dave himself)! Line forms to the rear! Thanks for the time Dave!

Oh yes we do, Karl! Those of us at SHOT had the pleasure of handling the protos of this knockout. Thanks Dave. Needless to say, the Spy 007's were the most coveted lights of the show. Can't wait to have one!

What fun to see them being born in person. That would be thrilling!
