Interesting. Both mine are the old type with no protection. When did you get it?
As lumenlover2 asks are there any other differences? Is low and high mode the same as the old one?
This Q5 WG has got some green tint on it and the hotspot is much more intense.
The low mode is much lower than the old board ( at least 15% less to my naked eye)
This one I got it from Fenix Store - actually a replacement for my sudden dim L2D RB100.
Both mine are the old type also
Since it's the same head as the P2D and L1D, maybe it's been tweaked to accept up to 4.2v and keep the low modes?
Which one is the one with reverse polarity protection on your second picture, left or right?
And what does WG stand for?
Thanks
The left one has reverse polarity protection.
WG stands for the tint of the LED, check this thread.
That's really nice. Good to know that Fenix is constantly upgrading their products.
left....wonder if runtimes are different
Hurrah, polarity protection and a lower low![]()
Very interesting.
I got my L2D Q5 in December 07 from Fenix-Store, and the head looks like the one on the right.
The other Q5 head from Lighthound for my L1D/P2D (as part of the 4in1 Powepack) was received a week ago, and it looks like the one on the left. I do agree the newer head has a lower low and a slightly different tint.
Didn't know it was a different driver. Thanks for the info!!
And the lower low comes in handy!![]()
Somebody who has one has to check PWM-frequencies and regulation range ASAP.
The body has more knurling?
my fenix forward clicky just arrived today.
pop it in in my P2D & L2D,the satisfying feelin' is priceless
now my P1D CE Q5 with Leef body has a new cousins![]()
i never use 3.7 rcr in my P2D.
but i heard that it will go direct drive with 3.7 rcr and all levels perform the same (no low mode)
I had a chance to compare "old" L2D Q5, L2D R100 and a new L2D Q5 and L2T V2.0 Q2
Differences on new L2D Q5
- no preflash
- reverse polarity protection
- warmer tint (almost rebel like)
- stronger textured reflector
- smoother beam (no cree ring)
- slightly less throw
L2T V2.0 Q2
- same reflector as new L2D Q5
- same smooth beam and tint
old L2D Q5 on the left, new on the right
and some beamshots![]()
upper left old L2D Q5, upper right new L2D Q5
lower left L2D R100, lower right L2T V2.0 Q2

nice beamshots
i agree that the new driver has no pre-flash on low mode and has warmer tint![]()
Smoother beam can also be caused by "silver" Cree. It's higher so it sits deeper in the reflector.
I am not sure which version I have of the L2D Q5. I don't have my light with me at work. With the newer board, has Fenix corrected the flashing problem that was present with the earlier L2D Q5's? By flashing problem, I mean the brief high intensity flash seen as the light is placed in its lowest level mode?
Yes, at least the new one I have has no turbo flash when switching to low mode.
This info is good to know !
Nice job, Fenix.

The "old" Q5 looks brighter on the pics....
Thanks ...
