New memeber here. I read somewhere on this board that one of the highly recommended LED lanterns was actually available at select Target stores for a great price - $19.99. It was called the RiverRock LED Lantern. It was this one:

http://www.flashlightreviews.com/reviews/riverrock_lantern.htm

I just called them and they do in fact have a lantern that fits this description "almost" exactly. The price is about right too - $22. The major difference is that its a 3 AA model and it uses a "Luxeon" light not Jupitor. However, the packging looks almost exactly like the one described in the article.

My question - was the original RiverRock LED Lantern everybody was raving about last year just a one trick pony? I get the feeling that Target now carries a different version of the same lamp. Can somebody shed some light on this?

Please help, Thanks

The lantern in that link is the old version with the button on top. The new version is a K2 and has the button on the side along with a locater led, which is useless unless you are looking straight on at it because it is recessed. The new version has 2 levels and strobe mode. I have and like both models. My usage is for lighting the interior of my camper when we are camping without hookups(no power). I'm sure someone else can jump in with more info.

Katdaddy,

Thank you very much for your feedback. More questions: What does K2 mean? Is that as good as the Jupiter LED one? Also how many lumens is the new RiverRock K2 lantern version? This will be exclusively for power outages so I think I will need at least 85-90 lumens. Thanks

You can find out about the K2 version here: https://www.candlepowerforums.com/threads/172826. I picked one up a few months ago on clearance at Target. I like it alot. However, since the clearance sale, Targets in New Hampshire haven't been carrying any River Rock lights at all. Don't know why if they are available elsewhere.

Re: Is Target still selling that great RiverRock LED lantern??

Ok, well since the RR 3AA model now selling at Target is inferior to the original based on my research I need your expert opinion guys.

I found these on the DealExtreme website. I am a new member and I am not interested in moding, etc. Just want a long lasting (>5H), well made off-the-shelf LED lantern for power outages. These all look like they are generic RiverRock "lookalikes." Not sure if thats a good or bad thing. However, each one has a different emitter. If you had to pick one of these three, which one would you get and why? I hate the fact that they dont spec out the lumen output. Any risk in buying from this website?

Its either one of these or the Osram Golden Dragon lantern.

Don't know where you live, but Menards (home improvement stores)

carry the Sylvania / Osram "Golden Dragon" LED lanterns (4-AA).

Back in January, these were on sale at 5 Bucks each !

Now, last time i looked, they were about 8 dollars (i believe).

I think the Sylvania lanterns are superior to the Target K2 (3-AA) lantern,
plus they are less than Half the Price !

( i own both types )

Hope this is helpful.

Oh, and Welcome to CandlePowerForums !
