I noticed the other day Doug Ritter has a new PLB mentioned on his website; www.equipped.org. Smaller and lighter than SPOT, and the added benefit of not requiring a subscription. If I was still a serious backpacker I might get one once they hit the market (pending FCC approval).

For the approximately $300 price and no subscription fees and only 5.3 ounces (I assume that's with battery) this McMurdo Fast Find looks promising. I guess we'll have to wait for some reviews once it becomes available.

"This device has not been authorized as required by the Rules of the FCC. This device is not, and may not be offered for sale or lease, or sold or leased, until authorization is obtained. In other words, you can't buy these PLBs yet, so don't even bother to ask until they are FCC approved"

Yes I mentioned that in my original post. However as of two days ago the model 200 (non GPS version) has received FCC approval. It's probably not long before the 210 gets the certification too.
