I ran across this article today and thought it was neat. The author is able to coax a small, low power LED from a lump of silicon carbide!

The article goes on to describe how this phenomenon was first discovered by accident way back in 1907. It's a fun read, and I'm going to be searching through my old rock collection for a chunk of carborundum to try this for myself.
