Hi, I have box that houses two reflectors like so...Its for an off road motorbike.

The ballasts will be ran for periods of many hrs when used. & so I thought about just mounting them on the outside so they get cooled by the outside air rushing over them.

But could I mount them on the inside & just have some air vents on the sides of the box?

Is there a chance they will over heat in the box & fail?

thanks.

Sure.

Why don't you try them in the box on a static run. Run the lights for a few minutes and feel the heat rise on the HID ballast. Between the heat output of the bulbs and the ballast, my guess is you will be moving the ballast to the outside, or putting a fan on the box.

I reckon if I cut air holes or vents on the side it might be ok.

I know its alot more cramped then under the bonnet of a car. But there will be some air flow & the bulb heat might be the equivalent of engine heat.

I bet you could get away mounting the ballast in the box, especially if you cut holes in the box. You'll get more airflow over the ballast through those holes than you would with any fan you could install.
