Many have done just that and a few have actually gotten money from the spammers.
Some have assumed identities that you would think might have been a clue but still communicated for long periods. Sherlock Holmes, Santa Claus, etc. These wer complete with the appropriate references.

I need to get in contact with Mr. Ahmed because he owes me $15,000,000 for helping the family of that Nigerian Exile

I used to administer the spam blockers for a couple corporate data centers and would happily forward all porn spam (upwards of thousands per day) to e-mail addresses like this - until they filled up.

None of our clients used hotmail or yahoo, so I didn't care if they black listed me.

My friend loves to entertain these Nigerian scammers. He pretends to fall into their trap and gets their details and they even send over photos and bank a/c numbers for you to transfer $$ to them.

He then later furnishes these pics and a/c details to other Nigerian scammers. They stop replying right after that. Haha.

What is sad is some people have fallen for it. Some computer admin guy in FLA lost thousands in the scam. How dumb can people be?

What is sad is the radio and TV ads that promise riches. Why do they need me? Oh, they just want my $$.

I'm sure they'll be a small processing fee to release those millions, payable by Western Union or some other wire transfer.

LOL, pretend you're a lonely old man with no-one to talk to in a nursing home for alzheimer's patients. It would be an awesome cover, no fax, no telephone. E-mail the guy 16 times a day just to see how he is or if he's eating well, or just send the same e-mail 5 or 10 times, insisting that you don't know how these darn-new-fangled thing-a-majigs work. Ask him if he's your son and if he's come to bust you out of this horrible place, or constantly go on about how your children have abandoned you there. You could even lure them in with promises of re-writing your will. All sorts of foolishness is possible, you could insist that the orderlies are abusing you, and strongly urge the scammer to contact the authorities. Heck even tell them war stories about the time you killed a man in WW2 (or was it Korea?:naughtywith a shoelace and a pack of chewing gum. Think Cotton Hill meets One Flew over the Cocoo's Nest. Best of all you could really test the limits of their patience by constantly forgetting who they are or what their requests are.

It would be great to be able to see if in the future when he/she goes to contact new potential scam-ees if they recoil a bit at the idea of inadvertently running into another Cotton Hill or Walt Kowalski. If you like behavioral psychology this would be great fun.

Who knows but many have lost tens of thousands and a few have been killed.
If they think you have money they will try to get you to Nigeria. It is easy to get in without a visa and almost impossible to get out. Then they can blackmail you and a few have died.

Had a nice conversation with one of these scammers a while back... first kept him going for about 2 weeks to get more info on the deal he was offering. Then another week as I was 'trying to sort things out with my lawyer' and then told him that I was unfortunately unable to help him as Mr. Fink (my alias) is currently in jail serving a sentence for internet fraud. Never heard from Mr. Johnny Mugabe from Mali again...

I thought I was the only one with such an inheritance!
