Yes, in fact I recently did a similar upgrade (though driven harder) for another customer. In his case, the original upgrade was to be a Cree MC-E but we changed course and used an SST-50.

(As an aside: the Cree MC-E remains an outstanding performer! Choice of that vs. SST-50 usually depends on applicability to the given constraints and circuitry, as well as personal preference.)

Using the new AW brand 2600mAh 18650 protected cells, it looks like a Gotham suitably modified to run SST-50 in the 300-400 lumen ballpark would deliver roughly 2 hours bright output.

    Hi Scott,

I sent you a PM and an e-mail about my light, but I'm not sure if you got it or if it's buried under a hundred others.

    Greetings Scott!

I sent you an e-mail about a project light . . . And then remembered that the last time I sent you an e-mail, it ended up in your spam folder.

Please check that folder for the subject "CPF - L1 Project idea."

    Thank You.

Thumbs up Re: Milkyspit Mods, Thoughts, Eye Candy [LOTS OF PHOTOS] Part 4

    Speaking of the MC-E:

The ugly U2 in the middle has been at Scott's place and is now putting out about 400 lumen of neutral white light and has a better beam than my stock black U2.
    Runs on an 18650 or 2 cr123s

Thanks again Scott. I know it was a lot of work, but IMHO this is the best mid sized light out there.

    Hey Scott,

Pm'd you about some mods i'm interested in for my E1 Teardrop. In addition to the options I mentioned in the PM I was wondering if it was possible to mount a K2 TFFC in the E1 head?

    Thanks!

How about some Phlat candy with a Bite

This is Phlat Stanley and he lives on a shelf.
Milkyspit made a Phlat place in his head to put his only eye, and made a custom monocle just for him.

Now just feed him 1 IMR and choose from 4 different missions Memory, Tactical, Theater and Trail. And there is Miser Mode.
Memory mode has Ultra Low, Low, Medium and High
Tactical mode starts on High, Strobe, Medium, Low, Ultra Low, Beacon (Low Pulse every 3 seconds)
Theater Mode Starts on Ultra Low, Low, Medium, High
Trail Mode works like an HDS

The Graham Knives and Maratac Cu just looked nice on the bistro table and have nothing to do with MilkySpit

How does the SSt50 work with the optic? It looks like the dome would be way too big to fit...

Also, how do you switch between types of modes? Is there a certain pattern to click out? Or does the head twist loose/tight in a certain pattern?
I love my HDS/Ra Clicky... My only wish would be a 5th(accessible thru a 2click press) mode, and a 2AA tube.

The SST-50 fits into the hole in the optic fine, it is a medium beam, not a spot like in an XR-E. I'd say its focused to about 50 feet then it breaks and just lights up everything in front of you.

If your in Theater mission and you give it 20+ presses then it goes into Tactical mission
Just stop and leave it on for a second and you can repeat the 20+ presses to move on to Trail then repeat to get into Memory.
If you press ?40 times or maybe its 60 times then it steps the output down to Miser levels were all output is reduced to extend runtime. Repeat the 40-60 presses to get back to full output

My thumb hurts just reading that.

Still, excellent way to make sure the light stays in the mode you want.

    Hi Folks,

I wanted to update you all with some eye candy. I like small lights that throw, but aspheric small lights give out sub 100 lumens and 6~8k 1 meter lux Yes, all of them I know I tested them. Even the fancy ones too.

So I asked Scott to build me my L1 with an R2 at 1.5A and run off a single cell. He said there is no driver for that, but Direct Drive (DD) we can achieve it, but the initial current will be as high as 2A. It is 2A at 1st, but settles down to 1.5~1.6A real quick and stays there almost like a fully regulated light too.

Here is the items off the top off my head, but Im sure there is more involved:
    • XR-E R2 Direct Drive
    • Retain Focusability via TiR optic
    • Copper to help with heat (alot of it and custom)
    • L1 4-flats converted to fit AW 17670 cell
    • Make the tailcap switch provide 40~50 lumens (it does 45 OTF)
    • Low positive profile positive contact
This light makes 14,825 lux at 1 meter. I did the measurements at 5 meters and calculated back to 1 meter.

When I 1st got the light I was really impressed with the copper being visible through the optic. If you look closely the copper color is there.

Bigchelis - That is some serious stuff going on there. Is that the original R2 out of the newer L1's? I am guessing not but curious as to how wide the spill one can make with the same reflector. Does it get super hot in the hand quicky? Any beamshots headed our way?

In flood mode the outer corona seems to get twice as big, but the hotspot appears the same size. I tried to take pictures of the beam, but these lights with tight hot spots make it a challenge for me.

The R2 was provided and hand picked by Scott. I think it has super low vF.

The copper is key and I makes the light beter balanced IMHO.

EDIT: I tried to illustrate best I could in these pictures the flood vs. spot

If you look at the flood below....it still has a hotspot, just not as intense. The corona also has a diameter 2 or 3 times then when focused for a super intense hot spot. I actually been using it in floody mode for inside the house.

I may have some photos that I took for a short writeup on this build. I'm hoping to post that later this week... subscribe to this Eye Candy thread (if you haven't already) to get notification when the new writeup is ready.

To be honest, I have R2 emitters with lower Vf, and that's the point here... I profiled a number of candidates on the bench and selected the emitter that came closest to what I was after.

(As an aside, it also served as a nice proof-of-concept on a proprietary rig I made years ago to check relative brightness among a number of emitters here in the Milky Labs... in this case, I chose the brightest R2 having the desired current draw characteristics.)

Now your loaded! Nice picture with two awesome lights. Are those custom made flange for your tailcaps- they are sick!? It looks to me like the bezel on the Creemator is either Ti or SS. Or is it just the way the light reflects. Nice setup here.
