Yeah, I've thought about a waterproof "MC+" myself. You should be able to take any waterproof 2x123A host that will tailstand, the cheaper the better, and add the Milky circuitry, no? There should plenty of room, as you could loose the reflector if you need to . . . .

Anyhow, I thought I might look into that some time, but first I want some lights to return from Milky Labs , then I'll worry about new projects!

Dead center middle is the Tektite MC, If you got your hands on one the board could be swapped for a MC+
I never took it in the tub but its o-ringed and should be more weatherproof than a maglite

Guys, the MC2 as I've built in the PVC 2x123 housing was never intended to be completely weatherproof (unless one goes low-tech by putting it in a ziplock bag) so anything weatherproof will basically end up a custom build into a different housing. It's likely to cost more than the original MC2, unless we can identify some sort of dirt cheap off-the-shelf housing that would work for the build. It's an idea that needs a little more development. Suggestions welcome if anyone has thoughts!

Regarding other builds, I'm backlogged at present. On the other hand, today's a snow day, so I'm holed up in the Milky Labs working on builds... kinda nice as long as the family doesn't actually have to go anywhere!

Actually I've been prioritizing people with existing builds before putting a whole lot of time into designing prospective new builds. That's not to say I'll never give you any time, just that I'm trying to clear my plate as much as possible to make room for the new stuff. When you're one of the waiters, I suspect you'll appreciate that!

You guys into them? It has been a while. Hmm... I have a few ideas on sprint runs. Might do a batch of KL4 'Gossamer' heads, with some added twists this time around. I'm thinking neutral white MC-E and possibly etching the glass dome ever so gently to eliminate the donut.

I'm also thinking sprint run of a new LX2-based build I've had up my sleeve for a while. Basically it would be a merging of my Creemator, Legolas, and classic Milky L1 designs into one... or essentially a better and smarter LX2.

Might even have a little something to do with the A2L.

Or a batch of Room Sweepers in 1x123 and 2x123 (17670) bodies.

Or others?

Mind you, these are just ideas. I haven't put anything concrete together... yet. But I might. Soon. Or not so soon. Might be a complete surprise!

Since I've already got one of your sweet Room Sweepers, my vote goes to either the LX2 or A2L builds.

If that A2L project involves an A2 style output, throw oriented brighter beam + flood oriented lower output; then I'll e-mail you my credit card number RIGHT NOW!!!

FINALLY, the Milky Boxter KL4 that Scott has been meticulously working on has landed! This light simply put, is AWESOME. Scott gutted the original KL4 internals and replaced it with a K2-TFFC LED (bin UWOE) and his Acorn 1.3 with "califon" firmware. This sucker puts out about ~300 lumens give or take a few depending on 1 or 2 cell configurations but MAN, this is a "do it all" light.

Anyway, just thought I'd share my newfound joy

What's On Tap Right Now

Lots and lots of builds. Have several longstanding items that for various reasons have yet to reach completion, so spent most of the holiday weekend working on them. (I did take the liberty of enjoying an egg hunt and a visit with the grandparents.) Made some progress, today and all this week more of the same.

There also might be an opportunity for the return of the sprint run in the near future. Stay tuned on that.


CRI vs. Tint

A customer emailed me regarding the CRI aspects of his build. Thought the reply might be of some interest to share here...

I keep thinking about the color rendition... since I will be comparing it to my high output incans. The stats on the MC-E neutral look pretty good... but would the CRI be improved if we mix in a warm LED?

I'm not sure any LED will match the color rendition of a GOOD incan. (Which by definition has CRI of 100, which is the maximum possible rating.) But they'll still do a good job plus bring to the table additional benefits in runtime, heat, efficiency, overall output, multiple brightness, smaller overall size, etc. Certainly a good LED setup will put the CRI of most fluorescent sources to shame.

It's also important to understand the distinction between tint of the LED itself (cool, neutral, warm) vs. CRI. An LED's tint is not necessarily related to CRI. Plenty of neutral and warm LEDs have CRI that's no better than their cool white cousins. Remember that CRI refers to the colors one can see in the objects onto which the light falls, whereas tint refers to the color inherent to the beam of light itself.

Example: my "pinky" designs that combine a high output red-orange LED with several cool white LEDs for enhanced color rendition, received their nickname due to a distinct pink cast to the beam itself. That notwithstanding, the objects illuminated by this beam do indeed show a truer representation of their colors than they would under standard "white" LED light.
